ONE STORY OF FOR MOTHER EARTH starts with this weekend’s Super Bowl and the Food Recovery Network (FRN), UNILEVER/Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, and Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate…   

GOOD NEWS will be volunteering at the COW PALACE IN SAN FRANCISCO WITH THE FOOD RECOVERY NETWORK FROM Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate Major Party…  they expect to give over 10,000 pounds to two San Francisco food locations for those in need.

Student-Led Food Recovery Network (FRN) – now the largest in the US – is making a Big Impact during the Big Game. FRN and Hellmann’s Mayonnaise are working together so that no food gets wasted and goes to families in need in the Bay Area. Good News, Paul Sladkus & Ivy Ma are volunteering at Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Tailgate food location.

FOOD WASTE is number one in landfills, FOOD WASTE IS NOT ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance). DO YOU KNOW ANY MAJOR RESTAURANTS, HOTELS, EVENTS where there is food waste? Go to www.foodrecoverynetwork.org  and let them know…also volunteer for the student-founded 14-year-old organization at their website.

There are more than 1.5 million nonprofit and community organizations in the U.S. They have a huge impact on their neighborhoods by providing resources and enriching people’s lives. At a time in the nation’s history when there’s been undeniable progress, yet far too many reminders of how much more remain to be done, many of these organizations work hard to help educate and build more inclusive communities across the country.

Scott Becker, President of the Nissan Foundation and Nissan Senior Vice President of Administration, discusses the benefits of living and working together in a diverse society and how people can get involved today to make their communities better places for all. He also talked about how the Nissan Foundation has awarded several grants to nonprofits across the country to support programs that promote the value of cultural diversity in American society.

Interview With: Dr. Gary W. Harper, Ph.D., M.P.H, Professor, Department of Psychology; Director, Master of Public Health Program, DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois

Interview Focus: April’s National Volunteer Month spotlights opportunities around the nation and invigorates people to give back to their community. Dr. Gary Harper, a professor at DePaul University in Chicago and a board member with the National Runaway Switchboard, can address the psychological effects of volunteering and discuss how communities can get involved in combating the runaway crisis – an issue that affects youth nationwide.

Dr. Harper to also discuss what are the latest findings from NRS’ trend report that show who is running and what their issues are, along with local call statistics. In fact, the latest trend report based on NRS’ call statistics since 2000, reveals that this crisis hasn’t slowed down. There has been an increase in:

Calls from homeless youth. Over the past three years, there has been a staggering 50 percent increase in calls from homeless youth, and an 80 percent increase over the past decade.
Calls from throwaway youth. Over the past three years, there has been an 18 percent increase in calls from throwaway youth and a 50 percent increase over the past decade.
Calls from kids who have been on the street for six months or more. There has been a 48 percent increase over the past three years, 70 percent increase over the past ten years, and 32 percent increase over the past year.
Callers identifying economics, neglect and GLBTQ issues as their problems. Twenty-seven percent more callers have identified economics as a problem over the past three years, and 83 percent more over the past decade. There has been an 11 percent increase in calls from kids identifying neglect as a problem over the past year and 44 percent increase over the past decade. There has also been an increase of 7 percent over the past three years in callers wanting to discuss GLBTQ issues and 36 percent over the past decade.

About the National Runaway Switchboard: The National Runaway Switchboard, established in 1971, serves as the federally-designated national communication system for homeless and runaway youth. NRS, with the support of more than 150 volunteers, handles an average of 100,000 calls annually. NRS provides crisis intervention, referrals to local resources, and education and prevention services to youth, families and community members throughout the country 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Over 13,000 youth have been reunited with their families through the NRS Home Free program done in collaboration with Greyhound Lines, Inc. The NRS crisis hotline is 1-800-RUNAWAY. Company Background:
In 2010, I decided to build a bridge between my two passions, fashion and philanthropy. I had been in the fashion industry as a model and actress, since moving to NY in 2004 and I wanted to employ the influence and creativity of the fashion industry to make a difference in our world, on both a national and international scale. I began a fashion blog (www.cortneyrenee.com), wherein I covered philanthropic fashion brands (brands that have a give back built into their business model and fund a partner NGO or an internal NGO). In my research and networking I learned of ingenious social entrepreneurs pioneering new territory, and I realized they were on the cutting edge of social enterprise by employing fashion as a tool to effect global change. My mission continued to evolve and grow, and I began to offer professional modeling services to these start-ups and my fashion industry insight to help them enter the mainstream.

Now, a year later, I am hosting my 2nd evening of philanthropic fashion where we celebrate brands making a difference. I have professional models (many of them my friends) act as spokes models for the evening. Our first event, “Share the Love: An Evening of Philanthropic Fashion” saw 1,000 inspired and thrilled New Yorkers, and was a huge success. See my interview with the Green Stylist. Our next event, “Hampton’s Summer Preview Party: An Evening of Philanthropic Fashion” will be held May 23rd, 2011. Our major fashion sponsors include Peace Love World, Same Sky, Native Honey, and our non-profit partners include the Somaly Mam Foundation and Print4Change/Healing Haiti, and our corporate sponsors include the Body Shop, Equinox, and many more. I have also begun to offer fashion film production to brands to build their brand image online and give them new inventive ways to reach their target demographic. I look forward to seeing this division grow.

Cortney Renee moved to NYC to attend The King’s College where she studied Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. Her pursuit of modeling and acting provided appearances in Brides magazine and feature films and TV shows including How To Lose Friends and Alienate People, August, and Gossip Girl. Her passion for justice inspired involvement in the 2009 launch of Stop Child Trafficking Now. Her love for fashion and philanthropy birthed a brand which aims to promote ethical fashion. She currently resides in NYC where she endeavors to bring light to designers making a difference! Her long term hope is to inspire the fashion industry to make a creative and engaging world contribution. Her personal mission is to reflect true beauty, and her definition of “true beauty” is one that “come from a heart that lives to give back”. So she endeavors to reflect that in all things, both professionally and personally.
