Review: “Innovators in Exile”

Dear friends and supporters,

In April, we witnessed an extraordinary musical event with Innovators in Exile: 100 Years of the International Society for New Music. 17 musicians performed music by eight exiled composers over the course of three evenings, illuminating works repressed for almost a century. No longer lost to history, these musical masterpieces were finally given the performances they deserved.

We were thrilled by the musical mastery shown by the musicians who brought these compositions to life. Please keep a look out in the coming weeks for video recordings which will be posted on our YouTube channel. In the meantime, please check out this preview of the recordings from the festival and the photos below:

Lastly, thank you to all our supporters who helped to make this festival a reality. Your support was crucial to making Innovators in Exile possible.

However, the conclusion of this festival isn’t the end of Elysium Between Two Continent’s work to illuminate the work of these important artists. Elysium is still dedicated to eliminating hatred and discrimination through the means of art. We will continue to work to bring these beautiful musical masterpieces to light so that contemporary audiences in the U.S. and in Europe have the chance to experience the joy and beauty inherent in these works.

If you’d like to continue to support this important mission, consider making a one-time or recurring donation today: All donations are fully tax-deductible. Please scroll down to the bottom of this mail and use the button there.

Thank you again for supporting Elysium Between Two Continent’s mission and we can’t wait to continue this important work with you.

With best regards,

Young women of distinction from all over the country and around the globe are brought together at the ball and the surrounding parties with daughters of Diplomats, titled Europeans, Ambassadors, Governors and Presidents of the United States. Over the years, the ball has benefited numerous charities through the International Debutante Ball Foundation, including one of its major beneficiaries, the Soldiers’, Sailors’, Marines’, Coast Guard and Airmen’s Club of New York, which provides a home away from home for the men and women of our Armed Services

ABOUT MARGO
Elegant. Edgy. Captivating. Sexy.
“I was born during intermission,” states spirited and internationally-renowned jewelry designer Margo Manhattan. Daughter of New York City Prima Ballerina Karin von Aroldingen and God-daughter to Ballet Master George Balanchine, Margo was born into a life of beauty and culture, one that prized precision, hard work and originality. Inspired by the fast pace of New York and the exciting beat of its dance and theater worlds, Margo’s sleek, versatile designs present a vision at once elegant and edgy, captivating, and sexy.
Margo began making Jewelry in the Byzantine technique at the tender age of 15. She instantly fell in love with the metals and stones and the endless possibilities they afforded her creativity: she had found her calling. After graduating from FIT, Margo perfected her knowledge of jewelry design in Paris at the Studio Bercot. She then immersed herself in the fashion industry, landing jobs with Karl Lagerfeld and Patrick Kelly, and with famed Vogue photographer Arthur Elgort. When her jewelry was discovered in a styling shoot by Patrick Demarchelier, Paris Vogue decided to prominently feature her work.
Shortly thereafter, Margo’s business extended the globe, from Paris to Hong Kong. Upon returning to New York, Margo set up her production facilities, opened accounts throughout the U.S. and was prominently featured in major fashion publications from Vanity Fair to Joyce in Hong Kong. In the 1990’s Margo combined her love of jewelry with her other great passion—philanthropy. This took the form of symbolic, ground-breaking designs: first the Earth pin for Earth Day (1990) followed by the original Red Ribbon lapel pin for AIDS awareness (1991). This furthered Margo’s reputation as a visionary, socially aware designer. She then developed the Pink Ribbon for Breast Cancer for Estée Lauder’s Breast Cancer Research Foundation and for other breast cancer fund-raising efforts. These ribbons have become icons over the two decades.
The new Margo Manhattan boutique opened to great fanfare in December 2010 on 88th and Madison Avenue, featuring sterling, alluring gemstones, diamond, gold and platinum jewelry. The boutique celebrates Margo’s philosophy of enhancing beauty from the inside out by creating a variety of looks through mixing and matching different types of chains: leather, pendants and necklaces all combine to display Margo’s signature styling. “The piece finds the person,” says Margo, who immediately focuses in on each client’s unique features. She reflects each individual’s beauty by custom tailoring a look and design, whether it is for everyday wear or for a wedding, engagement or other special event.
Margo first developed a dedicated following with her signature Passion collection—bold but romantic interlocking heart rings. Her passion and inventiveness as well as her signature philosophy of “living in the moment” come through eloquently in every aspect of her design, from conception through execution.

Shapiro Bernstein, America’s oldest independent music publishing company still active on the Billboard charts, this year celebrates its centenary. Over the past 100 years, the New York based company has had hits with classic songs including “In the Mood,” “You’re Nobody Til Somebody Loves You,” “On the Sunny Side of the Street” and “Ring of Fire” and today is continuing that tradition of hit songs with modern day chart toppers such as David Guetta and Usher’s “Without You,” Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Put Your Records On,” and Black Eyed Peas “I Gotta Feeling,” which has been certified as the biggest selling single of the digital era.

Says the President of Shapiro Bernstein, Michael Brettler, “We must be doing something right to be in business for 100 years in New York City. In a world of conglomerates, our long term survival as an independent company has been based on the ability to make quick, savvy decisions over many decades. Through four generations, we’ve always been able to adapt to new innovations and challenges, and have strived to maintain very close relationships with our clients and songwriters.”

Incorporated in 1913 (but with roots dating back to the 1890’s), the company began publishing out of offices on Manhattan’s West 28th Street, better known as Tin Pan Alley, in the age of ragtime and vaudeville. The founding partners, Louis Bernstein and Maurice Shapiro, teamed up with composer, Harry Von Tilzer, fresh on the heels of his first hit song, “My Old New Hampshire Home.”

In the years that followed, the company went through many changes and partners before Louis Bernstein, Maurice’s brother-in-law, took over the business after his untimely death in 1911. The name was restored to Shapiro Bernstein & Co., Inc. and that year the company had its first major hit with “Trail of the Lonesome Pine.”

Louis Bernstein went on to become a founding member of ASCAP and serve as its Vice-President for 26 years. During the formative years of the modern music industry, Shapiro Bernstein was a consistently outspoken advocate for the rights of the creative community, engaging as a plaintiff in several landmark cases still cited by specialists in copyright law.

The company was able to adapt to the changing industry of the 1930’s, utilizing favorite bands of the Swing Era, emerging jazz stars, and Hollywood movie musicals to popularize songs that are now considered American classics. Benny Goodman launched “The Glory of Love”; Gene Autry performed “You’re The Only Star (In My Blue Heaven)” in three of his films; and Tommy Dorsey launched “In the Blue of the Evening,” sung by a young man named Frank Sinatra. In 1940, Glenn Miller debuted “In the Mood” – which spent 12 weeks at #1 and became perhaps the best-known dance song in American history.

At the close of the 1940’s, Shapiro Bernstein ushered in the era of rock ‘n’ roll with the ground-breaking “Guitar Boogie” by Arthur Smith, and followed it with Fifties and Sixties pop standards like “Cry,” “Papa Loves Mambo,” and “Harlem Nocturne.” When Louis’ son-in-law Dick Voltter took the reins of the company in 1962, he continued to expand the diversity of their catalog, securing rights to and eventually purchasing the Columbia Pictures catalog acquiring score classics like The Guns of Navarone, The Bridge on the River Kwai, and Lawrence of Arabia.

Seeing an opportunity in the emerging country music market, the grandson-in-law of Louis Bernstein, Leon Brettler, formed Painted Desert Music and opened a Nashville office in the early 1960’s. It was a move that paid off quickly and continues to pay, yielding hits like “Wolverton Mountain” and the Johnny Cash all-time country classic, “Ring of Fire,” penned by his wife-to-be, June Carter and his best friend, Merle Kilgore.

Today Shapiro Bernstein remains a current leader in the world of independent music publishing and continues to publish songs that top the charts. They actively court new writers and expose their current hit makers to the public and the industry.

Under the leadership of Michael Brettler, who became president in 2000, Shapiro Bernstein is committed to continuing in its long tradition: “I am proud to be at the helm of such an iconic music company which has maintained its role in developing and championing music writers for 100 years. Our songs today are just as much in demand as they ever were, and we represent and publish some of today’s hottest writers and most exciting songs.”
