New Orleans-born saxophonist 2022 NEA Jazz Master Big Chief Donald
Harrison Jr. is a musician/composer whom master musicians consider a master
of every era of jazz, soul, funk, and a composer of orchestral classical music. He
is also a genius, according to geniuses like Eddie Palmieri and Mike Clark. His
alma mater, The Berklee College of Music, awarded him an Honorary Doctorate
in 2021. In the HBO drama Treme, Emmy-winning director David Simon
created two characters to portray how Harrison innovated new styles of music.
He appeared as an actor/musician in nine episodes of “Treme,” in Oscar-winning
director Johnathon Demme’s film “Rachel Getting Married,” in Spike Lee’s
“When The Levee’s Broke” documentary, and Marvel’s “Luke Cage.” This
talented artist is the recognized Big Chief of Congo Square in Afro-New Orleans
culture and was Chiefted in 2019 by Queen Diambi Kabatusuila from the
Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa.

Harrison honed his experiences playing with Roy Haynes, Art Blakey, Eddie
Palmieri, Dr. John, Lena Horne, Dr. Eddie Henderson, Miles Davis, McCoy
Tyner, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Chuck Loeb, The
Headhunters, hip-hop legends Digable Planets, Guru’s Jazzmatazz, The
Notorious BIG, and The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He has performed with
over 200 jazz masters and innovated three influential styles of jazz. At nineteen,
Harrison created a modern jazz take on the New Orleans second-line tradition
and introduced his composition, New York Second-Line, to the jazz world in
1979. By the mid-80s, he created Nouveau Swing, a distinctive sound that
blended the swing beat of modern jazz with hip-hop, funk, and soul music. In the
’90s, Harrison recorded hits in the smooth jazz genre. He began exploring music
through the lens of quantum physics in 2000. With quantum jazz, Harrison
expanded music from a two-dimensional state into a four-dimensional state.
Harrison mentored artists as diverse as Christian Scott, Darius Deezle Harrison,
Johnathon Batiste, Esperanza Spaulding, Trombone Shorty, and The Notorious
Big.

In 2024, Harrison will perform and release his recordings "Magic Touch,"
"Congo Square Suite," and" The Art of Passion" from his Omniverse Music
multi-genre singles concept.

BIO: Dr. Wayne Batchelor received his B.A. and Doctorate of Medicine degrees summa cum laude at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario in Canada. He then completed a Comprehensive Internal Medicine Residency and Fellowship in Adult Cardiology at the University of Toronto and a fellowship in Interventional Cardiology with a Master’s of Health Science Degree in Clinical Research at Duke University.
He is the incoming Director of Interventional Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology Research at the Inova Heart and vascular Institute in Fairfax, Virginia. He has served on the Medical Faculty as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto and as Associate Professor of Medicine at the Florida State University College of Medicine and has practiced as an interventional cardiologist at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Ontario Canada and at the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in Florida.
Dr. Batchelor has given numerous invited lectures, published over 75 peer-reviewed original abstracts/manuscripts, and contributed multiple book chapters. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society for Cardiac Angiography and Interventions, and was selected to serve on the American College of Cardiology’s (ACC) D2B (Door to Balloon) Task Force, a national committee charged with improving the rapidity of care for heart attack victims across the U.S. He currently serves on the ACC’s Interventional Cardiology Sectional Leadership Council.
His primary expertise is in structural/valvular heart disease, coronary and peripheral arterial disease, carotid artery disease and clinical research in interventional cardiology. He was instrumental in starting the first structural/valvular heart program at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and served as Chair of its Interventional Cardiology Council. He has a keen interest in radial artery access percutaneous coronary interventions and has performed more than 4,000 radial access coronary stent procedures.
During his career, he has been recognized as the recipient of a number of awards, including the Dr. and Mrs. Sydney P. Schiff Medal in Surgery, Nathan E. Berry Prize in Urology, Sopman Award for Clinical Excellence and Human Compassion, National Research Fellowship from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, and the Capital Medical Society’s Outstanding Physician of the Year Award in 2017.
He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Cardiovascular Disease with added qualifications in Interventional Cardiology.

The event will be on Thursday, December 13^th starting at 6:00PM at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Theatre, featuring performances by jazz legends Wynton Marsalis, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Esperanza Spalding and Corinne Bailey Rae. This unprecedented gala event will be hosted by ABC news anchor George Stephanopoulos and filmmaker David Lynch.
