In global development, few professionals have seen the system from as many vantage points as Hermina Johnny. A former United Nations specialist in partnerships, sustainable development, and gender equality, Johnny built her career navigating complex institutions designed to shape the future.

But it was a simple, recurring question—one she found herself asking in meeting after meeting—that ultimately changed her path:

“I sat in rooms focused on solutions for women and young people,” Johnny says. “Yet they were often missing from the decision-making spaces themselves.”

That disconnect—between intention and inclusion—became the catalyst for Aspire Artemis Foundation, the global nonprofit she founded to bridge the gap between policy and access.

From Global Frameworks To Ground-Level Impact

Johnny’s work across the UN system, the European Parliament, and international organizations placed her at the center of high-level coordination on issues ranging from climate change to human rights.

Her mandate was clear: build partnerships and design solutions.

But over time, she began to see a structural flaw.

“Too much of the system is built around conversation,” she says. “Not enough is built around access.”

Despite widespread commitments to gender equality—including global targets for parity by 2030—Johnny observed that representation in leadership remains uneven, particularly for women and youth from underserved communities.

Her response wasn’t to push for incremental reform—it was to build a parallel pathway.

Building A Pipeline, Not Just A Platform

Aspire Artemis Foundation operates at the intersection of education, workforce development, and innovation—with a focus on underserved youth, especially girls and communities across the Global South.

Its mission is both ambitious and pragmatic: equip, empower, and educate the next generation of leaders in a digital economy that is rapidly leaving many behind.

“At Aspire Artemis, we don’t just talk about opportunity—we structure it,” Johnny explains.

The organization delivers programming across STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), combining technical training with mentorship, leadership development, and real-world exposure. Its initiatives range from AI and digital literacy to entrepreneurship, policy engagement, and cultural innovation.

Central to its model is what Johnny calls the EMI framework—Educate, Mentor, Intern—a three-part system designed to move young people from potential to placement.

“We’re not just preparing young people to participate in the future,” she says. “We’re preparing them to shape it.”

The Mentorship Gap—and Why It Matters

One of Johnny’s key insights is that talent is universal—but access is not.

“Mentorship is one of the most underestimated drivers of success,” she says. “It’s often the difference between someone seeing a possibility and actually achieving it.”

For many young people, particularly in underserved communities, that access is limited or nonexistent.

“In places where youth unemployment is high, internships and unpaid opportunities are not realistic options,” she notes. “You can’t build a career pathway if you’re focused on survival.”

Aspire Artemis addresses this gap by connecting young people with global mentors, creating pipelines into industries where representation has historically been low.

The model is already showing results—from students gaining international exposure to young leaders advancing into professional roles and leadership positions.

Rethinking Women’s Leadership In The Digital Economy

Johnny is particularly focused on the future of work—and who gets left out of it.

In the tech sector, the disparities are stark: only 2% of venture capital funding goes to women-led startups, with even fewer resources reaching women in developing markets.

“That’s not a pipeline problem—it’s an access problem,” Johnny says.

Her solution is to rethink how talent is identified, trained, and supported—starting earlier and scaling faster.

Aspire Artemis integrates arts and creativity into STEM, promoting a more holistic approach to innovation—one that prioritizes emotional intelligence, cultural awareness, and human-centered design.

“The future of technology isn’t just about code,” she says. “It’s about context. It’s about who is building—and who it’s being built for.”

While global conversations around diversity and inclusion have gained traction, Johnny is clear-eyed about what’s still missing.

“We’ve moved past awareness,” she says. “Now it’s about execution.”

She also emphasizes the role of men in accelerating change.

“The most effective progress happens when men are active participants in advancing gender equality—not just observers.”

Why One Nonprofit Offers Free Weight Loss Consultations

SEATTLE, Wash. – (December 18, 2020) – According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of obesity is over 42%. The weight loss and diet industry in the country is estimated to be around $72 billion. One retired doctor is on a mission to change that, offering free weight loss consultations at his newly launched nonprofit called Seattle Weight Loss Center, in an effort to help as many people as he can to achieve weight loss success.

“I know what it’s like to struggle and yo-yo diet for years,” explains Dr. Michael Stern, founder of the Seattle Weight Loss Center. “I’ve been there, and I’ve learned a lot along the way that I want to share with others, so they can have the same success with their weight loss.”

Dr. Stern, a retired urologist who has extensively studied weight loss from a variety of angles, has become a weight loss specialist. A former marathon runner, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1995, and today is a quadriplegic. Seeing how so many people struggle with weight issues, which bring about or exacerbate underlying health conditions, he founded the Seattle Weight Loss Center. Through the nonprofit organization, he is on a mission to help as many people as he can to take control of their weight, successfully shed the extra pounds, and improve their overall health and well-being.

Conducting everything through Zoom, Dr. Stern is able to help people with their weight loss journey from wherever they are in the country. His weight loss program, called Dr. Stern’s Rotation Diet, is shared in his new book by the same name on Amazon. The diet offers a weight loss program that focuses on four main components, which are motivation, disciplined endurance, diet, and exercise. With Dr. Stern’s Rotation Diet, people pick two or three diets that work for them, and rotate them to increase success rates. One of the other key aspects of the plan is to know the “why” so you know what motivates you to lose the weight.

His program goes beyond just what one eats and how many calories they burn. He explores the psychological aspects of weight, including teaching people to incorporate mindfulness, meditation, and more. He helps people gain an understanding of the keys to success, how to stay the course, and hacks to help people achieve long-lasting weight loss. His program shares the secrets of how he lost 70 pounds in seven months, without exercising Vat all. 

“With my program, people will overcome the challenges and barriers to weight loss, help reduce comorbidities, and once and for all stop yo-yo dieting,” added Dr. Stern. “Plus, people have nothing to lose but the weight because my advice is free. Helping as many people as I can is something on my bucket list, so it’s a win-win situation.”

Dr. Stern has attended weight loss conferences, as well as worked with a variety of professionals in the field to gain a better understanding about weight issues, including nutritionists, physical therapists, and psychologists. As part of his program, he will also be recommending ongoing treatment to board-certified physicians and surgeons in obesity medicine in each patient’s local area. After spending 60 years yo-yo dieting, he has successfully applied all he has learned about losing weight and maintaining the loss. It is a trip that should be significant to all those who believe in the concept of fairness, democracy, and human rights. More than a public relations campaign, this trip is very meaningful. Its implications will hopefully continue to reverberate because of its high profile status and unequivocal solidarity with the people of the State of Israel. It would be prudent for us to stand up and take notice.

The threat facing Israel today is perhaps unprecedented, and I’m not just referring to the physical aspect of this threat. Israel’s very legitimacy is currently being challenged daily by those who would like to claim the moral high ground. Governor Cuomo’s trip was instrumental in addressing these concerns. I, among all like-minded New Yorkers, greatly appreciate his gesture in expressing solidarity with the Jewish state.

As Governor of the State of New York, Cuomo’s visit is symbolic. New York remains a key player in international finance and plays an integral role in the world economy. According to a report in ‘Start-Up Nation’, New York’s trade with Israel totaled more than $4.5 billion dollars last year, and some 200 Israeli start-ups are estimated to be located in New York City alone. So the message of the Governor’s visit is not just political in nature. It expresses the economic best interest of his millions of constituents.

In the end of the day, the economic outlooks of the two states are intertwined. A nation of less than 8 million people, Israel has 65 companies listed on the NASDAQ, more than any other country outside of the United States and Canada. It’s also got the highest number of start-ups per capita of any nation in the world.

Governor Cuomo recognizes this. That’s why he is so determined to stand with Israel during these trying times. His visit has captured both national and international headlines, allowing the world to see that the governor of this most populous state (and perhaps a potential national leader) expresses a keen understanding of the very delicate and sensitive position that Israel finds itself in.

To the best of my knowledge, Governor Cuomo is the very first governor to visit Israel since this crisis started more than a month ago. The visual effect of watching him visiting an actual tunnel from which Hamas fighters can indiscriminately attack Israeli citizens is a powerful one for the world to see. More than anything else, the world at large — including the Europeans — must be made to understand that the State of Israel has a key partner in the State of New York. As their economies are closely linked, they inevitably enjoy deep reservoirs of mutual support.

There is a saying that goes: The best defense is an offence. There are those in this conflict who engage in this strategy by relentlessly attacking Israel for killing innocent civilians. Yet it is mind boggling to me how any remotely objective person could consider equalizing the missiles being fired at Israel with the tempered Israeli response. It’s almost like the child who murders his parents and then cries because he’s an orphan!

Of course we mourn the death of the innocent Palestinians. And the destruction of Gaza neighborhoods is also heart wrenching. But we place the blame solely and squarely on the shoulders of those who have decided to terrorize Israel. As the Governor said during his trip: “We understand what you are facing and we support your right, your need, to defend your people against terror.”

Time and again during his stay in Israel, the Governor connected the common goals and aspirations of Israel and New York. “The fight that you fight,” he said, “is the fight against terror. Unfortunately in New York we’ve had a rude awakening to the pain and suffering that terror can cause back in 9/11. So we have a special sensitivity in our hearts for what you’re going through now.”

He also highlighted the fact that we share a common enemy. “They’re against Israel,” he said, “because Israel is a democracy. And those that oppose democracy oppose Israel here in the Middle East and they oppose us.”

In many respects, an expression of solidarity with Israel is identification with peace. As New Yorkers, we understand Israel’s quest for peace. After the Six Day War, Israel found itself in control of Gaza. It relinquished that control years later, providing the Palestinians an opportunity to show the world that they can indeed govern their people respectfully and generate a better future for the coming generations.

But that didn’t happen.

Instead, billions of dollars were poured into the building of terror tunnels which the Governor himself toured. Upon emerging from those very tunnels, he said, “You see that network of tunnels and it reminds you of how tenacious and aggressive the enemy is. It will not stop. You thwart them on one level and they will come back on another.” Governor Cuomo by personally traveling to Israel recognized the potential of these tunnels to wreak havoc on Israel’s civilian population.

I am certain that the Governor, as well as all of us, would love nothing more than to be able to celebrate peace between Israel and the Palestinian people. But until that day comes, we need to understand the precarious position that Israel is in and to express our steadfast and unwavering kinship with its brave people. Personally, I would be delighted to see an additional forty nine governors visit Israel, perhaps within the next forty nine days. The world at large must see this as well. They must understand that it’s not just the Congress of the United States that stands shoulder to shoulder with the Israeli people. It is also the governors — every single one of them — who represent some three hundred million Americans standing together in supporting the State of Israel.
