But we still have time to change course. We can avoid more dire impacts of climate change by limiting warming to 1.5° C (2.7° F) according to a recent report by the United Nations.

The world is already 1.1° C (1.9° F) hotter than it was between 1850 and 1900, the pre-industrial era. And while there’s no question that limiting warming to 1.5° C will be difficult, there’s also no question that we have the technology needed to do it—and that every tenth of a degree matters.

In 2015, 196 countries signed on to a single, sweeping plan that aims to keep global warming to well below 2° C (3.6° F)—or even 1.5° C. The unprecedented Paris Agreement builds on decades of gradual work by the international community to combat climate change and adapt to its impacts. World leaders must work together to eliminate the release of heat-trapping carbon by 2050. To do this, they will need to strengthen their commitments to cut emissions over time.

But climate change is not a problem that governments can solve alone; we need collaboration across regional governments, businesses, and communities as well. We also need to help wildlife and people cope with a rapidly warming planet.

About the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center of The Hamptons:
The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center, Inc., Eastern Long Island’s only wildlife hospital, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of wild animals impacted by human encroachment on their habitat. It is a grass-roots organization that began with a few concerned friends and has grown to include over 3,000 members and supporters. The center operates as a full-service professional wildlife hospital, with licensed rehabilitators, biologists, animal behaviorists, and volunteers on staff. More than 300 people have been trained to help with wildlife rescues. The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center is located on Munn’s Pond Park through a cooperative licensing agreement with Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. The center is located on a greenbelt of public land parcels that stretches from Tiana Bay to Peconic Bay on the eastern end of Long Island, New York. This ecosystem is one-of-a-kind and irreplaceable, with salt and freshwater wetlands, Pine Barrens, deciduous forest, and meadowland. As a result, it is an ideal location for a wildlife rehabilitation center. The hospital is intended solely for wild animals. There are no ambient noises or smells to stress the wildlife that is recovering within, unlike a veterinary hospital. Every year, the Wildlife Rescue Center receives over 10,000 calls for information or assistance regarding wild animal encounters. In addition, the center offers educational programs to local elementary and secondary schools. Local college students participate in cooperative education programs and internships. The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center has an annual operating budget of more than $650,000, almost entirely funded by generous donors.

ON SAFARI IN TANZANIA, EAST AFRICA by Terri Hirsch

Arriving in the Kilimanjaro International Airport late evening we were met by our safari driver-guide outside the arrival lounge and transferred to our accommodations at the beautiful Kibo Pace Hoel in Arusha Tanzania. Our package featured Arusha Lake Manyara, Serengeti National Park, Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Arusha is the gateway to some of Tanzania’s most famous attractions: Mt. Kilimanjaro the National Parks and Lodges for Game Drives. Arusha is also known for the precious stone Tanzanite, produced in Arusha and exported worldwide.

After a great breakfast at 6:00 am, our group set out on our first safari to discover East Africa’s legendary wildlife. Our small group was outfitted in a six-seat safari vehicle with pop-up roof allowing for excellent viewing and photography. Our tour leader would rotate each day between our small group of two safari vehicles and tell us fascinating stories of the wildlife. Our sharp-eyed naturalist guides offered insights about the ecosystem
while spotting huge herds of elephants, wildebeest, zebras, towering giraffes and antelope. These huge herds gather to stay in Tarangire National Park until the onset of the rains whey they migrate to good grazing areas.

We departed after breakfast the following day and began the two-hour drive to Lake Manyara National Park, nestled on the basin of the Great Rift Valley. This small National Park has seven distinct habitats which are home to quite a few wildlife. Here we viewed small baboons black-faced monkeys, blue monkeys, impalas, giraffes, buffalo, elephants, waterbuck, bushbuck, zebras and wildebeest- all gathered in groups. Today’s highlight was a large hippo pool with hundreds of hippos. We were allowed to get out of our vehicle to take close-up photographs of these hippos. In the distance were thousands of flamingos on Lake Manyara.

On Tanzania safaris you are not allowed to get out of the safari trucks – this was the one exception. After a late picnic lunch of chicken legs, a small sandwich, water, juice and cake we continued our safari before proceeding to our lodge in Karatu for dinner and overnight. Karatu is one of the seven districts in the Arusha region of Tanzania. The sounds of a bush baby, known as a “Galagos” could be heard during the night.

The following day was a rare opportunity to take a village walk to the Tloma Village-Gibbs Farm to experience different activities of the local Iraqw Tribe. The tour included visiting a school, the Makonde Tribe carving center, the village church with traditional singing and dancing, and an outdoor local coffee grinding station. After returning to the lodge for lunch and a short nap, we continued touring the farmers market before our return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Today was the start of two days in the Serengeti National Park’s great migration. At 6:30 am, we proceeded to the Serengeti National Park entrance gate for a two-and half hour drive. Once inside the park we stopped for a picnic lunch where numerous birds could be seen. We were looking forward to enjoying our afternoon game drive en route to Central Serengeti. The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti is the largest mass movement of land mammals in the planet. Towering above is Mt. Kilimanjaro, the world’s largest mountain. The Serengeti ecosystem protects the most varied collection of terrestrial (animal) wildlife on earth and is one of the last migratory systems still intact. Not only did we see the wildebeest migration, we encountered baby lions being fed by their mothers, elephants taking baths, zebras, elands, giraffes, waterbucks, families with baby baboons, a tiger and a leopard sleeping in a tree. This was one of the most amazing wildlife spectacles to see.

The last morning our safari departed at 6:39 am with a packed lunch for a four-hour drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Center. Ngorongoro is technically a caldera, which is an extinct volcano and the largest intact and unbroken caldera in the world. The crater is a microcosm of African scenery with abundant wildlife of more than 20,000 larger animals. Over the years the floor of the crater has become mostly grassland with a lake whose size changes, depending on the rains. We descended 2,000 feet to the base of the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the lake were colourful flamingos and a variety of other birds – ostriches, cranes and storks. Glimpses of elephant, buffalo, cheetah, hyena, warthog and many antelopes were grazing on this land, Mid-afternoon, we slowly began the climb out of the Crater as we headed for a hot lunch at a lodge overlooking the Crater. After lunch, a two-hour drive took us to our lodge for an overnight and a late dinner. Our wildlife viewing was fascinating and the experience unbeatable on this game drive in the Ngororngoto Crater.
After breakfast, we were driven back to Arusha for last minute shopping at the Cultural Heritage Center. We proceeded to the Kibo Palace Hotel for lunch and a day room to freshen up. In the evening we were transferred to the Kilimanjaro International Airport for our flight back home.

World Environment Day (WED) occurs on the 5th of June every year, and is the United Nation’s principal vehicle for encouraging awareness and action for the protection of our environment. First held in 1974, it has been a flagship campaign for raising awareness on emerging environmental issues from marine pollution, human overpopulation, and global warming, to sustainable consumption and wildlife crime. WED has grown to become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually. Each year, WED has a new theme that major corporations, NGOs, communities, governments and celebrities worldwide adopt to advocate environmental causes.

World Environment Day [WED] was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 on the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, resulting from discussions on the integration of human interactions and the environment. Two years later, in 1974 the first WED was held with the theme “Only One Earth”. Even though WED celebration have been held annually since 1974, in 1987 the idea for rotating the center of these activities through selecting different host countries began.

For almost five decades, World Environment Day has been raising awareness, supporting action, and driving change. Here is a timeline of key accomplishments in WEDs’ history:

The theme for 2018 is “Beat Plastic Pollution”. The host nation is India. The theme for the World Environment Day 2018, “Beat Plastic Pollution”. By choosing this Theme, it is aimed that people may strive to changes in their everyday lives to reduce the heavy burden of plastic pollution. People should be free from the over-reliace on single-use or disposables, as they have severe environmental consequences.
About The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center Of The Hamptons:

The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the rehabilitation of wild animals impacted by encroachment of humans on their habitat. It is a grass roots organization that grew from a few concerned friends to a group of over 1000 members and supporters. The center is a full-time professional wildlife hospital staffed by licensed rehabilitators, biologists, animal behaviorists and volunteers. Over 100 people have been trained to assist in wildlife rescues. The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center is located on Munn’s Pond Park through a cooperative licensing agreement with Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. The center is situated on a greenbelt of public land parcels totaling several thousand acres and stretches from Tiana Bay to Peconic Bay located on the eastern end of Long Island, NY. This is a unique and irreplaceable ecosystem consisting of salt and fresh water wetlands, Pine Barrens, deciduous forest and meadowland. It is the perfect setting for a wildlife rehabilitation center. The hospital is designed exclusively for wild animals. Unlike a veterinary hospital, there are no ambient noises or smells to stress the wildlife that are recovering within. The Wildlife Rescue Center receives over 10,000 calls each year for information or assistance with wild animal encounters. We also provide educational programs to local elementary and secondary schools. Students from local colleges participate in cooperative education programs and internships. The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center annual operating budget exceeds $350,000, almost all of which comes from the generosity of people like you. Thank you for your continued support and generosity.

As California faces severe water shortages and farmers let their groves go fallow, a study finds that marijuana growers are sucking streams dry.
News on Wednesday that California’s snowpack has hit a record low of just 6 percent of normal means next-to-no spring runoff will flow into streams and reservoirs that supply water to the cities and farmers who feed much of the nation.
But before you light up a (legal) marijuana cigarette to take your mind off impending doom, consider this: With every puff you take, you could be making the epic drought even worse.
A new study finds that pot growers in the Northern California weed belt are diverting 100 percent of the water in some streams to irrigate their cash crops.
“Last summer, we went out and picked a handful of streams in the study area, and we looked at real-time stream flow,” said Scott Bauer, an environmental scientist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. “Four out of those five streams went dry.”
A Humboldt County, California, pot farm.
That means no water for endangered salmon and other wildlife, not to mention people. Some avocado growers, for instance, are letting their groves go dry because of water shortages and the high price of irrigation. In other words, kiss your guacamole goodbye.
Agency scientists focused on illegal pot operations in Humboldt County, the epicenter of California’s marijuana industry. Greenhouses dot the hillsides, and the pot plants inside are thirsty: Each uses about six gallons of water per day, compared with the 3.3 gallons wine grapes consume.
Wildlife officials started receiving calls about stream diversion in 2009, said Bauer, who is based in the Humboldt town of Eureka. “A number of us started going out with game wardens called out to grow sites and our focus was to document the environmental damage,” he said.
The scientists noticed significant problems—stream diversion, hillsides graded to make level growing fields, and dirt being dumped into waterways.
“We started to realize this was a real problem,” said Bauer.
In 2012, as the drought began to take hold, the researchers used Google Earth to count all the plants and figure out how many are in greenhouses, and to compare the number of plants with stream flow data.
They chose four areas, all surrounded by forests, and all with streams containing endangered salmon. The scientists estimated that the growing operations were using between 138,200 and 191,265 gallons of water a day. People in Northern California, for comparison, use an average 172 gallons of water per day per person.
Marijuana growers were taking 100 percent from three of the streams studied and 25 percent of a fourth stream.
Those streams aren’t just picturesque—they’re critical to the survival of the coho and Chinook salmon and steelhead trout.
Will there be a movement for sustainably grown pot?
“I think if people understand what’s going on, hopefully they’ll asking questions about how green is their product,” Bauer said. “If they’re concerned about our state’s natural resources, they should be asking those questions. Is this something that isn’t harming California’s resources?”
