The layoff wave is still going strong. U.S.-based employers announced a staggering 257,616 job cuts in the first quarter of 2024, marking a notable uptick in workforce reductions compared to the same period last year.

Whether someone has lost their job in a round of layoffs, was fired ,can’t find a job, or is going through a personal painful experience, it can lead to a range of emotions from desperation, anxiety, sadness, and even anger.

No matter what setbacks someone faces, it becomes crucial to begin a plan for personal development, which can help you understand your values and strengths while also helping you align your realistic goals and emerge from whatever dark hole you may feel you are in.

The Oliver Wyman Forum is hosting an invite-only, in-person event of art and exploration for business, academic and media leaders at Fotografiska New York on emerging disruptions coming out of the pandemic.

It will be an immersive and interactive art experience with several executives and thought leaders sharing perspectives on the emerging new drivers of consumer demand, evolving workforce needs, the growth of the metaverse, and more. Inspired by Oliver Wyman Forum insights in Renaissance 2022: New People Shaping Our Future covering 18 months of research with 100,000+ human voices across 10 countries on the most pressing changes and trends emerging from the pandemic.

The evening will start with a private viewing of award-winning photographer Michelle Watt’s exhibition capturing the macro disruptions in art over hors d’oeuvres and drinks, followed by a discussion on the implications for businesses as we look to the future. Mayor Euille began his business career as an accountant with an Alexandria construction company in 1972, and within eight years, he advanced to Vice President/Controller, ultimately having responsibility for all contracting, financial and administrative functions. In 1987, he formed WM. D. Euille & Associates, a construction services firm, specializing in federal government contracts.
A native of Alexandria, Virginia, Mayor Euille graduated from T.C. Williams High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut in 1972.
The Mayor is active in community affairs in Alexandria and Washington, DC. His dedicated involvement includes the William D. Euille Foundation, which he founded in 1994; the Alexandria Boys and Girls Club; the American Heart Association; 1998-2000 Chairman of the Alexandria United Way Campaign; INOVA Hospital Health System Board; Hopkins House Association; 2001 Chairman of the NOVA Urban League Board of Directors; Alexandria Community Trust; The Alexandria Rotary Club; and the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria. He is a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Alexandria.
He has also been active in business and construction industry organizations such as the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce; the US Chamber of Commerce; National Association of Minority Contractors; Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc; and the NOVA Building Industry Association.
Mayor Euille has received many major awards and honors, such as the 1994 Entrepreneur of the Year from the Virginia NAACP (The Mayor was the inaugural winner of this award); Who’s Who in the East; Who’s Who in America; 1995 Community Service Award from the Hopkins House Association; Outstanding Young Men of America Award; 1996 Blue Chip Award from the US Chamber of Commerce; the 1996 Entrepreneur of the Year from the Washington Post and Ernst & Young, LLP; the 1996 Small Business Person of the Year from the US Small Business Administration; and community service awards from the Alexandria NAACP (1996), Northern Virginia Urban League, Inc. (1997), Alexandria Chamber of Commerce (1997), and the Alexandria Sportsman Club (1998); Philanthropist of the Year 2000 from the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce; SBA’s Graduate of the Year Award in 2000; Education Association of Alexandria’s “Whole Village Award” (2001); and the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce Business Leader of the Year (2001), and the 2016 Man of the Year Award from Nu Xi Zeta Sorority, Distinguished Service award (2016), from Friendship Veterans Fire Engine Association; Lifetime Achievement Award, from The Alexandria Democratic Committee; and Rotary International Community Caring Award (2016).
Mayor Euille was elected to a three-year term on the Alexandria City Council in May, 1994. He was re-elected in May, 1997 (Vice Mayor) and in May, 2000. He was elected the City’s first African-American Mayor in May, 2003 and was re-elected Mayor in May, 2006, 2009 and in November 2012. He served on the Board of Directors for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority; the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA), and the Virginia Econimic Development Partnership. He is Past Chairman of the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC) and Past President of the Virginia Transit Authority (VTA). and past Chairman of the Washington Metropolitan Council of Governments (COG), and past President of the Virginia Municipal League (VML); Past member of the U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) and National League of Cities (NLC).

Hong Kong and US continue strong economic ties Kung Hei Fatt Choi!!

The Hong Kong – United States economic and trade ties grew from strength to strength last year, with more direct flights, bumper trade and cooperation in combating tax evasion, said Commissioner for Economic and Trade Affairs, USA, Mr Clement Leung today (February 19, New York time).

Speaking at the Chinese New Year Spring Reception organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (HKETONY), Mr Leung said that international airlines opened new direct flights to Seattle, Dallas/Fort Worth and Newark, adding that Cathay Pacific Airways will launch its inaugural direct flight from Hong Kong to Boston in May.

Hong Kong imported US$40 billion worth of U.S. goods last year (2014), and improved access for US agricultural products and made the city the most open market for US beef in Asia. Meanwhile, Hong Kong and the US concluded agreements to combat tax evasion.

Noting that The Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal have recently ranked Hong Kong as the freest economy in the world for 21 consecutive years, Mr. Leung said Hong Kong would continue to capitalise its position as China’s global financial center. “We’ll leverage our ‘superconnector’ role between the Mainland of China and the rest of the world.”

He told the American guests that Hong Kong was working to promote new growth sectors of arbitration, intellectual property trading, creative industries, as well as innovation and technology. “We are upgrading the quality of our workforce as we are facing an aging population and are making it easier for talented people and entrepreneurs from around the globe to come, stay, live, work and establish a business there,” he added.

Also speaking at the occasion, Director of HKETONY, Mr Steve Barclay said aside from promoting closer economic, investment and trade ties, his office aims also to foster cultural ties between Hong Kong and the 31 eastern states.

He highlighted the first collaboration with the Yale-China Association to bring two promising Hong Kong artists to Yale University on a fellowship program. Parry Ling , a relational artist, and Hao Yang, a choreographer/dancer, are currently on a six-month residency at Yale.

Mr Barclay said the Office would organise a week-long “Spotlight Hong Kong” exhibition at Time Warner Center from February 25. The exhibition will focus on Hong Kong’s vibrant mix of East-meets-West cultures – from cultural heritage, creative and film industries to performing arts.

One of the exhibits will be a series of Hong Kong Street Markets which were painted by US nationally recognized illustrationist Michael Sloan during his residency in Hong Kong in 2012-14.

The exhibition will also help promote the US debut of the Hong Kong Dance Company’s performance, “The Legend of Mulan”, at Lincoln Center from March 5 to 8.

To reach out to the US young generation, Mr Barclay said his office has launched a new Facebook – Hong Kong Meets America. It carries all sorts of trendy, useful and interesting information about the city.
To promote Hong Kong music talents, the reception featured performances by the Cornelia String Quartet, led by violinist CheHo Lam; and singer songwriter Mara Measor, both Hong Kong-born and raised.
The reception ended with a grand lucky draw, with the winner receiving a pair of Newark-Hong Kong round trip premium economy tickets sponsored by Cathay Pacific Airways.

About 370 guests, mainly comprising key members of the business, government, academic and media sectors, attended the reception in New York.

Gale Brewer Sworn In as Manhattan Borough President
MIDTOWN — Former City Councilwoman Gale Brewer, who for 12 years represented the Upper West Side and won consecutive terms in landslide elections, was sworn in Sunday as Manhattan’s 27th borough president.
Brewer’s inauguration took place before hundreds at the Hammerstein Ballroom, and she used the occasion to announce the appointment of two deputy borough presidents, rather than the typical one.
“I’m breaking tradition today,” she said, after a warm introduction from Mayor Bill de Blasio. “As de Blasio said, I love to do that.”
Brewer introduced Aldrin Rafael Bonilla as the new deputy borough president for community and borough operations. Bonilla previously served as executive director of CUNY in the Heights, which is part of the Hostos Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development. Brewer also announced that Joseph Garba, who was previously the director of state legislative affairs under Mayor Michael Bloomberg, would serve as the new deputy borough president for policy and budget.
Brewer vowed to work on expanding free wi-fi, creating more high-quality middle school seats, ensuring schools can provide art education and getting neighborhood residents involved in local zoning and development decisions.
“We’re done with the campaign, thank God. And now comes the part that i like best: governing,” Brewer said.
“So If you supported me because of who I am, and what I stood for and accomplished, you will get nothing less from me as borough president. I will continue to have an accessible office, an experienced and dedicated staff, a strong commitment to transparency and accountability, and a dedication to a city government that works from the ground up.”
Prior to her election as borough president, Brewer served on the City Council representing the 6th district, which includes most of the Upper West Side and the northernmost part of Clinton.
Mayor Bill de Blasio introduced Brewer, praising her work in City Council and her commitment to reform, transparency and progressive values.
“From time to time I find the phrase ‘force of nature’ appropriate to define someone, and Gale Brewer rises to that level,” de Blasio said, citing the amount of reading material she brings home each night, the number of interns she takes in, and the ten-page emails she is known for sending.
“People on the Upper West Side have gotten used to the notion that this is what their council members should do, this is what their leaders should do. Well now people all over Manhattan are going to see it,” he said.
De Blasio also noted Brewer’s lack of filter, a statement she proved with a joke about the George Washington Bridge traffic scandal.
“I want you all to know that I plan to use my power as borough president wisely. There is no truth to the rumors that I am closing lanes at the Holland and Lincoln tunnels,” she said.
Brewer will serve a four-year term as borough president, replacing Scott Stringer, the city’s new Comptroller. She concluded her remarks with a call to action.
“Let’s get to work,” she said.
