Voting is over, so now let’s pray we don’t have to hear the best and worst from many and only see Good News from all the candidates. Congratulations to ALL, we have:

FREEDOM TO VOTE, AND FREEDOM IS PEACE.

The Good News is that there are many truly doing public service, and we praise and thank them in Peace and Love. Forward Motion.

We have some local New York City Good News Political stories to share:

The first is the Giving Back Foundation honoring Mira Nair, the Mother of Zohran Mamdani, and a great filmmaker. Zohran grew up seeing the power of her films and also the wisdom of his dad, a Political Science Professor. Here is an Award given to Mira in 2013 by friends at the Giving Back Foundation. Also, here is my interview with Mira and others at the IAAC Indian Awards, also in 2013, in which she discusses Peace.

I had the experience this year of speaking about two candidates I know and believe in, and I learned a great deal from handing out flyers. I suggest that everyone get some experience with our voting system and candidates, as it can build your respect for our FREEDOM TO VOTE.

PS- I was also the President of my Sleepy Hollow High School Senior Class, so every reunion I have the opportunity to be involved and share some great times, he he!

Here are three interviews that Good News has the honor to share with you. The first is one of the founders of the Working Families Party; the second is our new president of the Manhattan Borough, Brad Holyman-Sigal, talking about FREEDOM, during the celebration victory party, during an interview with the Gay City News that I also recorded and asked short questions. The last was with our friend and Earth and Peace Day Partner, the current Manhattan Borough President, Mark Levine, when he was interviewed on Spectrum TV about becoming the Comptroller of New York City and his stance for overseeing the finances for our NYC Administration for the best for ALL living in New York City.

Social isolation and loneliness are immense societal challenges that have a real impact on both our physical and mental health. Both are common issues and very serious ones. According to an AARP survey, one in three adults aged 45 and older are lonely[1]. And research shows loneliness is as deadly as smoking 15 cigarettes per day[2], making it as much a public health concern as obesity.

The loneliness epidemic has long been a major societal issue. COVID-19 has undoubtedly made it worse.[3]

Fortunately, research shows that interaction with pets may have a positive impact on both our mental and physical wellbeing from childhood well into old age.

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month and Mars Petcare is partnering with Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Health’s Center for Human-Animal Interaction and its Dogs on Call therapy dog team on a pilot study exploring the effectiveness of therapy dog interventions in improving both loneliness and related health outcomes for older adults in hospital settings.

Veterinarian Angela Hughes, PhD, DVM, and Nancy Gee, PhD, Director of the Center for Human Animal Interaction at Virginia Commonwealth University, discusses the issue of loneliness among older Americans and reveal the goals of the therapy dog study surrounding this issue. This new study – and the field of research into Human-Animal Interaction (HAI) – is all about exploring the potential of the incredible bond that pets and people can have and the role each can play in making life better for the other.

The holiday season can be a joyous time of year, but it can also be a stressful time for many people. Whether it’s financial worries over a long gift list, anxiety about difficult family dynamics, exhaustion from juggling a hectic schedule, or loneliness being apart from loved ones due to these unprecedented times, emotions are often heightened at this time of year and mood changes are common.1
Even people with no history of mental illness may feel confused about whether they are experiencing the temporary feelings of “depression” associated with the “holiday blues” or if symptoms may be something more serious that should be discussed with their healthcare provider.
And for the 1 in 5 Americans who are living with pre-existing mental health conditions, research shows that the holidays can be particularly challenging.2 In fact, 64% of people with mental illness report holidays make their conditions worse.1
This can be especially true for people who struggle with certain mental health conditions that can be exacerbated by stress. For those living with bipolar I disorder, for example, stress, sleep disruption, and heightened emotional reactions to their environment—all common around “the most wonderful time of the year”—can trigger both manic and depressive episodes,3,4 so it’s important that people work to manage stress and monitor symptoms closely.
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Jessica Whelan, discusses why the holiday season can be particularly challenging for people living with mental health conditions like bipolar I disorder, the difference between holiday blues and bipolar I disorder, and a treatment option people living with bipolar I disorder can discuss with their doctors.
