As part of the festival, the Apollo will feature a Live Wire conversation, Hazel Scott: The Darling of Café Society, part of the Apollo’s popular series that honors iconic individuals who have impacted the Theater’s history. Karen Chilton, author of “Hazel Scott: The Pioneering Journey of a Jazz Pianist,” will lead this celebration of Scott with special guests, Damien Sneed and Camille Thurman. Returning this year to the festival, WOW: Teen Summit will dissect gender politics and how it impacts girls and young women of color. Through performances from singer, songwriter and spoken-word artist Brianna Knight and singer Alyssa Martinez and a panel discussion moderated by reporter and producer Kay Angrum with community activists Akia S. Callum, Malaysia Freeman, and Hebh Jamal, audience members will be encouraged as a collective to take action towards their goals. The Festival will close with Apollo Film Presents: ImageNation’s Cocktails & Sol Cinema, featuring short films by women from around the world in speculative fiction, sci-fi, fantasy and folklore. Additional details and a complete WOW Festival line-up will be announced at a later date. WOW Apollo is presented in partnership with The WOW Foundation.

WHAT: Women of the World (WOW) Festival

The Apollo Theater will gather artists, activists, and leaders from around the globe for the return of the WOW – Women of the World Festival, a four-day festival presented in collaboration with the Southbank Centre London on May 4-7, 2017. Founded in 2010 by Southbank’s Artistic Director Jude Kelly and originating at Southbank Centre, London, the international festival celebrates women and girls and promotes gender equity. The Festival made its New York premiere at the Apollo in 2015.

Highlights of the WOW Festival include conversations with Lupita Nyong’o, Gabby Douglas and Gabourey Sidibe as well as performances by Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves and Esperanza Spalding.

Before the show, the Apollo and Coca-Cola bring the magic of the holiday season to Harlem. Just before the Amateur Night Holiday Special, the Theater will offer a variety of holiday-themed activities and performances free and open to the public under the iconic Apollo marquee. Hosted by Billy Mitchell, Apollo Theater tour director, festivities include picture-taking with Santa Claus, prize giveaways, and performances Refining Faith and Acapella Soul. Additionally, in the spirit of giving, the Apollo will be a designated location for a toy drive to benefit STRIVE’s Strong Fathers, Stronger Families Program. Located in East Harlem, STRIVE services hundreds of unemployed or underemployed fathers who are trying to remain positive role models for their families.

The legendary Apollo Theater lights up this holiday season with the Apollo Amateur Night Holiday Special, the 4th annual event under its signature program Amateur Night, showcasing recent winners of the show’s “Apollo Stars of Tomorrow” category. Featuring an incredibly talented array of instrumentalists, singers and dancers from ages 11-18, this program captures the spirit of young performers all hoping to follow in the footsteps of Apollo Legends like Michael Jackson and Ella Fitzgerald, whose careers were launched on the stage of the Apollo.

Special Guest Host:  Currently the host of BET’s 106 & Park, rapper and actor Bow Wow has been in the music industry since the tender age of five years old. Discovered by Snoop Dogg, he was featured on the iconic rapper’s groundbreaking Doggystyle album. For his solo debut, Bow Wow teamed up with Jermaine Dupri to release Beware of Dog in 2000, the kickoff to a string of platinum and gold albums that spawned six No. 1 singles and such platinum songs as “Let Me Hold You,” “Like You,” Shortie Like Mine” and “Outta My System.” He is the “Youngest Solo Rapper to Ever Hit No. 1,” as recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.  Bow Wow has sold more than 10 million albums to date.
