Military Family Month was established by the Armed Forces YMCA in 1996. Proclamations have been issued by U.S. Presidents in recent times, and this year President Biden has followed suit, stating America has the greatest Armed Forces in the history of the world. He says we all owe a debt to those who serve and those that serve alongside them – their families and caregivers.

The backbone of the Army Reserve force is its Families, which is why each November we recognize their commitment, resilience and critical contributions to the Army Reserve.

Just like the Soldiers they support, Army Reserve families are strong and resilient, but face unique challenges. It’s the people of the Army Reserve that deliver on its priorities – readiness, modernization and reform – so taking care of service members and their families is equally important to the mission.

The Army recognizes that service members’ Families, like spouses and kids, also feel the effects of service – whether through relocation, distance from loved ones, among other challenges – but is committed to providing the best quality of life possible. The love and support from military Families is unwavering.

Throughout this awareness month and beyond, the Army Reserve focuses on the community-based services that foster the growth, development and readiness of Soldiers and Families.

Captain Brigette Miller and her husband, Nathaniel, discuss their Military Family experience. Miller will also discuss her journey from military kid to Army Reserve Soldier will offer great insight into the importance of this community. Captain Miller will also share how an Army Reserve Family Readiness Group has supported her unit.

Buoyed by his success, five months later, he ran his first marathon, and became the first amputee to run 26.2 miles. There was no looking back. In 1983, he founded the Achilles Track Club, currently known as Achilles International.

Dick has a BS, MBA, and Ph. D. from New York University and lives in Manhattan. He’s been married for 40+ years and has a married son and a granddaughter.

1976

Dick Traum, an above-the-knee amputee, completes the New York City Marathon, the first amputee to do so

1977

An article about Dick Traum appears in Runner’s World. The story inspires Terry Fox, a young Canadian amputee suffering from cancer, to embark on a cross country run across Canada to raise funds and awareness for cancer research. Terry ultimately lost his battle to the disease in 1981 but his legacy lives on in a series of Terry Fox races.

1983

Dick founds Achilles Track Club, and six members complete the NYC Marathon

1984

The Vermont Chapter is founded, the first chapter outside New York

1985

The first International Chapter, New Zealand, is founded

1988

The first Achilles Handicap 10K Race in Central Park

1991

Achilles hosts its first annual Tribute Dinner

1995

Achilles Kids is founded, kicked off with the “Race Around New York” virtual marathon

2001

The inaugural Achilles Marathon in Brooklyn

2003

Achilles launches the Hope & Possibility 5 mile run, a race that gives awards for achievement in multiple disabled categories and includes both able-bodied and disabled runners. The event’s name is taken from Achilles founding Board Chair, Trisha Meili’s book, “I Am the Central Park Jogger – A Story of Hope and Possibility”

2004

Dick Traum & Mary Bryant visit Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. to speak to the first group of Freedom Team runners. Later that year 34 wounded veterans came to New York City to run the 5 mile Hope and Possibility race.

2006

The first Hope & Possibility race outside NY takes place, in Minneapolis, MN 2006 – Founding of ‘Skills for Positive Change’, a program for people living with diabetes.

2007

Achilles celebrates participation in 25 years of the NYC Marathon.

2008

New York Governor David Paterson runs in the Hope & Possibility race, guided by Trisha Meili.

2010

Prince Harry of Wales, Cindy and Megan McCain, and Heather Mills join over 5000 participants in the 8th Annual Achilles Hope & Possibility. It was also the 1st year the H&P was an ING NYC Marathon Qualifying Race.

Seventy-Five Hundred dollars will be awarded on behalf of the HKDBF-NY 2014 Charity Boat Race participants to charities of their choice. Over the last twenty three years the HKDBF NY along with its Sponsors and Teams racing for various charities have contributed in excess of $200,000 to local non-profits. The dates for the 25th Anniversary Year 2015 Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York will also be announced.

An annual and much anticipated race occurring during the 2nd day of the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York, (August 10th, 2014) this year’s Charity Boat Race participants included teams from HSBC, DCH, and the Shanghai Commercial Bank with each Company/Team contributing $2,500 to the kitty. The race winner (DCH) designated charity receives half ($3,500) of the funds raised and the remainder ($4,000) is divided equally between the other charities ($2,000 each this year.

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York, an annual, multi-cultural celebration and sporting event, is the largest multi-cultural Festival in New York and the biggest Festival of its kind in the U.S. For twenty -three successful years HKDBF-NY has attracted a diverse audience of approximately 60,000+ attendees with 2,500 participants competing from across the U.S. and Canada. Taking place over two days on the site of the 1964 World’s Fair on Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows, Corona Park, Queens, NY, HKDBF-NY 2015 will feature events for the entire family.
