MANHATTAN BOROUGH PRESIDENT STRINGER, TURKISH CULTURAL CENTER OF NY & CITY HARVEST KICK OFF SECOND ANNUAL HOLIDAY HALAL MEAT DRIVE

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer today kicked off the second annual holiday Halal meat drive with the Turkish Cultural Center of New York (TCCNY) and City Harvest to commemorate the Muslim holiday of Eid ul Adha that encourages the donation of food to the hungry.  This year, the Turkish Cultural Center has donated 1,500 pounds of packaged Halal meat that will be distributed to some 600 partner agencies in all five boroughs. “We’ve all heard about the fiscal cliff in Washington, but this holiday season, thousands of New Yorkers are on the precipice of an economic cliff,” said Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer. “Last year, over 2.5 million New Yorkers struggled with food insecurity, and this number has only been compounded in recent months by the destructive … [Continue reading...]

in wake of recent anti-Muslim incidents on Staten Island The Interfaith Center of New York condemns last weekend’s incident directed at Muslim New Yorkers celebrating Eid at Staten Island New Dorp Beach Park. As the anniversary of 9/11 approaches and our city and country enter an important election season, ICNY calls on all elected officials and candidates for election in Staten Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx to resist stoking hatred and fear as a cynical means of attracting votes. Instead, we call on public officials both locally and nationally to adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards acts of religiously or ethnically motivated hatred. Clifton’s St. Peter’s Episcopal Church joins fasting during Ramadan

The members of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church have taken on a one-day solidarity fast with the Muslim community who are celebrating the month of Ramadan. Muslims celebrate the month of Ramadan with a 30-day fast. Muslims believe that the Qur’an, the Word of God for Muslims, was revealed by God to the prophet Mohammed during the month of Ramadan. The revelation began during the final days of Ramadan which are considered the most sacred period of the month. The members of St. Peter’s Church were told about the manner of the Muslim fast: they rise early in the morning before sunrise for a meal and then they do not eat or drink from sunrise until sunset. (Arabic: فيصل عبد الرؤوف‎, born 1948) is an American Sufi[1] imam, author, and activist whose stated goal is to improve relations between the Muslim world and the West.[2] From 1983 to 2009, he served as Imam of Masjid al-Farah, a mosque in New York City.[3][4] He has written three books on Islam and its place in contemporary Western society, including What's Right with Islam Is What's Right with America, and founded two non-profit organizations whose stated missions are to enhance the discourse on Islam in society.
