The Cultural Center of the Philippines

The Cultural Center of the Philippines is a government owned and controlled corporation established to preserve, develop and promote arts and culture in the Philippines. The CCP was established through Executive Order No. 30 s. 1966 by President Ferdinand Marcos. Although an independent corporation of the Philippine government, it receives an annual subsidy and is placed under the National Commission for Culture and the Arts for purposes of policy coordination. The CCP is headed by an 11-member Board of Trustees, currently headed by Chairperson Emily Abrera. Its President is Raul Sunico. I'm honored to announce that Mark Barden who lost his son Daniel in the December 14th Newtown massacre will join us at a special forum hosted by our Congressman Jerry Nadler on "Preventing Gun Violence" to be held this Monday, April 29th at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue on West 68th Street. Congressman Nadler and Mark Barden will give us insight into the current legislative battle to prevent gun violence and discuss specifically what New Yorkers can do to impact the current debate. A question and answer period with them will follow the presentation. The barong Tagalog (or simply barong) is an embroidered formal garment of the Philippines. It is very lightweight and worn untucked (similar to a coat/dress shirt), over an undershirt. In Filipino culture it is a common wedding and formal attire, mostly for men but also for women. The term "barong Tagalog" literally means "a Tagalog dress" in the Tagalog language; however, the word "Tagalog" in the garment's name refers to the Tagalog region, not the region's language of the same name. The barong was popularized as formal wear by Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay, who wore it to most official and personal affairs, including his inauguration as president.
