With the holiday season quickly approaching, children are inundated with advertising and talk of toys and gifts, creating a seemingly endless stream of “I want’s.” It’s easy for children to forget about all the things, both material and immaterial, that they already have in their lives.
According to Empowerment Expert Jen Groover, it’s important to teach children to express gratitude at a young age, as gratitude is a powerful emotion that will help them find peace in trying times as they get older. Gratitude also teaches kids resiliency, which is one of the key components needed for success and happiness. Your viewers can help their kids appreciate all that they have with Jen Groover’s 5 Ways to Give Your Kid an Attitude of Gratitude:

An Epic Journey - click to watch
The video (nor I) have nothing to sell. No hidden agenda. It is the creation of an amazing storyteller/filmmaker.
It is simply an epic short story with two profound questions about life at the end.
Oh, and it's gorgeous frame by frame.
I hope it brightens your eve/day.
And if you love it, as I do, feel free to share it with your friends. Start a conversation about it.

In tribute to the passing of the Nelson Mandela, I am sending a poem that the mother of one my student's reminded me helped sustain Mr. Mandela during his years of unjust imprisonment.
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Lindsay Doran is a highly successful Hollywood movie producer. With a string of hits to her name that includes Sense and Sensibility, The Firm, Sabrina, Stranger than Fiction and Nanny McPhee, even some of her "misses" could be considered hits. In October of this year, I was fortunate enough to hear her speak at the Austin Film Festival on a panel entitled "The Soul of Story." She spoke passionately for 90 minutes without so much as a sip of water or a glance at her notes. You could hear a pin drop in the room.
Doran became interested some years ago in the "Positive Psychology" movement pioneered by Martin Seligman. In his book Flourish, Dr. Seligman identifies five particular qualities that he says make life worth living: Positive emotions, engagement, positive … [Continue reading...]

Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights and Feast of Dedication, is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar, which may occur at any time from late November to late December in the Gregorian calendar.
The festival is observed by the kindling of the lights of a unique candelabrum, the nine-branched Menorah or Hanukiah, one additional light on each night of the holiday, progressing to eight on the final night. The typical Menorah consists of eight branches with an additional raised branch. … [Continue reading...]

FROM AWESOME STARTUPS TO ARMED STANDOFFS… SILICON VALLEY IS THE NEW WILD WEST IN AN INDUSTRY INSIDER’S SATIRICAL PAGE-TURNER OF A DEBUT NOVEL
The words “Silicon Valley” usually evoke images of shiny new devices unveiled at blockbuster product launches, geniuses performing coding miracles in futuristic office campuses, and blockbuster IPOs creating the world’s biggest fortunes.
They usually don’t evoke images of misfits, malefactors and ordinary schlubs turned into accidental felons…
But the same way Tom Wolfe unveiled the seamy underbelly of Manhattan high finance in The Bonfire of the Vanities, tech insider Ken Goldstein holds nothing back in his debut novel THIS IS RAGE (The Story Plant, on sale October 8, 2013, $15.95, 978-1611880717). Heidi was heartbroken. Time after time it was the same. She’d visit and get no sign of recognition whatsoever, so finally she made the painful decision to stop visiting.
It only upset her and she believed her mother felt no pleasure during her visits.

Fire Safety Tips to Better Communities
Daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 3rd, and marks the 26th year of the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery® program, created by Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), which reminds people to check, change and test the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors during the fall time change.
