Who Discovered Earth
Asking who discovered the Earth may seem like a silly question—but it isn’t. After all, what is there to discover, if the very first humans lived on the planet anyway? But while this is the case, it took some time before people actually recognized the Earth, the fourth one from the Sun in the Solar System and the only one known to have existing life, is a planet. This makes sense considering the various theories regarding the status of the Earth.
Before the claims of Nicolas Copernicus and the observations of Galileo Galilee, people believed that Earth is the center of the Solar System. This belief was pushed by Claudius Ptolemaeus, also known as Ptolemy. Ptolemy believed that the stars and the other planets orbited the Earth. Since the five classical planets were … [Continue reading...]

The Orchid Show celebrates its 15th year at The New York Botanical Garden with an homage to the wealth of orchids and rich cultural history of Thailand. Thailand is home to more than 1,200 native orchid species and over the last century it has become the leading exporter of cultivated tropical orchids in the world. Native and hybrid orchids alike have become synonymous with the nation.
This year’s exhibition in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory will feature an astonishing array of blooming orchids in a lush tropical garden, including a rainbow of vanda orchids, whose large patterned blooms are widely popular in Thai gardens and homes. The show culminates in a jaw-dropping scene of a large arched façade in the style of a traditional Thai pavilion—festooned with hundreds of exquisite orchids. … [Continue reading...]

Sandhill cranes on March 20 in the Platte River in Grand Island, Neb. The peak roosting period this year was March 8 through March 16.
You’ll hear it before you see it.
The ancient call of a single crane can trumpet out for miles. And when they all cry out at once the sound multiplies by the tens or hundreds of thousands.
Each spring, around half a million sandhill cranes descend upon a small stretch of the Platte River in Nebraska on their way north to Canada, Alaska and Siberia, from their winter homes in Mexico and the Southwest. Starting around Valentine’s Day through the first half of April, they rest there to prepare for nesting up north.
Thousands of visitors come from all over the world to greet them. This year, biologists at the Crane Trust … [Continue reading...]
Snow in Central park. One of the Park's most picturesque landscapes, the reservoir is 40 feet deep and holds a billion gallons of water. It was built in the 1860s as a temporary water supply for New York City, while the Croton Water system was shut down for repairs two weeks each year. At the time, it was unthinkable that a billion gallons of water would last less than two weeks. Today, some speculate that the City would go through that supply in just four hours. The reservoir was decommissioned in 1993, deemed obsolete because of the Third Water Tunnel.
President Bill Clinton, Madonna, and Jackie Kennedy Onassis (for whom the reservoir was named in 1994) have all run on the 1.58-mile track. For years, an unsightly seven-foot-high chain-link fence obscured the view. But when scuba … [Continue reading...]
Ailanthus altissima /eɪˈlænθəs ælˈtɪsᵻmə/, commonly known as tree of heaven, ailanthus, or in Standard Chinese as chouchun (Chinese: 臭椿; pinyin: chòuchūn; literally: "foul smelling tree"), is a deciduous tree in the Simaroubaceae family. It is native to both northeast and central China, as well as Taiwan. Unlike other members of the genus Ailanthus, it is found in temperate climates rather than the tropics. The tree grows rapidly and is capable of reaching heights of 15 metres (49 ft) in 25 years. However, the species is also short lived and rarely lives more than 50 years, though its remarkable suckering ability makes it possible for this tree to clone itself indefinitely and live considerably longer (since they are linked … [Continue reading...]
TRAPPIST-1, also designated as 2MASS J23062928-0502285, is an ultra-cool dwarf star located 39.5 light-years (12.1 parsecs) from the Sun in the constellation Aquarius. It is as of February 2017 unique in light of its seven detected roughly Earth-sized planets.
In 2015, astronomers discovered three Earth-sized planets orbiting the dwarf star. A team led by Michaël Gillon at the University of Liège in Belgium detected the planets using transit photometry with the Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. On 22 February 2017, astronomers announced four additional exoplanets around TRAPPIST-1. Besides TRAPPIST, this work utilized the Very Large Telescope at Paranal and the NASA Spitzer Space Telescope, among others, and brought the … [Continue reading...]

Incredible news: Ahead of the G20 summit, the United States and China formally joined the Paris Climate Agreement yesterday. This historic announcement by President Obama and President Xi has catapulted the world to the cusp of formally implementing the Paris Agreement this year.
Implementing the Paris Agreement will be a major global climate milestone, but there's still unfinished business at the G20 summit.
Dumb and wasteful -- that's how a recent Bloomberg View editorial described fossil fuel subsidies. We couldn't agree more.
We're living through what is likely to be the warmest year on record, yet governments continue to subsidize fossil fuels that power climate disruption. Despite a 2009 pledge to phase out these toxic subsidies, G20 nations are currently spending hundreds … [Continue reading...]
