Psychiatrist and Human Rights Activist Dr. Robert Okin Wants All Americans to
See the Faces and Listen to the Stories of Our Society’s Most Overlooked Outcasts:
The Mentally Ill and Homeless http://www.robertokinmd.com
From L.A. to Philly to Miami, they’re out there—pushing their carts, digging through garbage, sleeping on park benches, sometimes ranting about nonsense to no one. They often look and sound crazy, smell bad, and make us uneasy, so we avoid them. We know better intellectually, yet most of us shun people suffering from homelessness and mental illness because we view them as deeply flawed—somehow less human than the rest of us.
As part of his career devoted to the mentally disabled, Dr. Robert Okin decided to use a powerful artistic … [Continue reading...]

Dear Family, Friends, & Valued Business Associates,
I am putting on my dancing shoes again to help raise money to send children living in the Foster Care system to summer camp. I have joined Team "Show me the Money", in The Dance This Way Dance-A-Thon to be held in New York City on Sep.28,2014 for The Felix Organization/ Adoptees for Children, Sheila Jaffee's Non-Profit Organization. For many of these kids, the camp experience is life altering. They learn skills, or discover ones that they already had. They are offered exposure to a world they could never have before imagined, and learn that a better life is indeed within their reach. It gives them hope. It shows them that they do matter, and they are loved.n If you are able, please help to enrich the lives of these kids. Grow … [Continue reading...]

'Pretty Amazing' Finalist, Fights To End HIV/AIDS Stigma and Bullying Through The Sharing Of Her Own Life Experience…
A memoir by Paige Rawl
Paige Rawl was just like any other normal girl. She was a cheerleader, an honor roll student, a soccer player. She was pretty and popular, known as one of the good kids at her Indianapolis middle school. She just happened to be born HIV+. Her mom told her when she was eleven. Paige thought nothing of it; it was just like any other condition you needed to take medicine for, like allergies or asthma.
In her memoir, POSITIVE, Paige tells the story of what happened after she disclosed her HIV-positive status in order to comfort her best friend. Within the next few hours, everyone at her middle school knew. … [Continue reading...]

At only 16 years old, a junior, in high school, it was on December 11, 2008 when Amanda Suzanne Brownell tried to take her life in a bathroom at Del Mar High School in San Jose, California. This was a result of the bullying, sexual bullying, and cyber bullying she endured through MySpace, Facebook, AIM, and the 3500 text MESSAGES she received the month before her suicide attempt. Amanda, suffered severe brain damage, unable to speak or care for herself.
After almost 4 and 1/2 years Amanda decided that her job here was done. She was hospitalized with pneumonia and seizures on March 13, 2013, while her parents were in Hawaii on vacation. On March 23, Amanda did not want to be poked and squeezed anymore. She was done and did not want any type of medicine or food. There was a family meeting … [Continue reading...]
