AFT Statement on Gun Safety Legislation Votes

April 19, 2013 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

AFT President Randi Weingarten’s statement on today’s gun safety legislation votes. “Make no mistake—the NRA and the gun manufacturers won out today over the life, liberty and happiness of our children, families and communities. A government by the people and for the people must serve the American people and not the gun lobby. “The tragic question facing us now is how many gun deaths will it take before Congress lives up to its basic responsibility to protect and serve the American people? Twenty-six children and teachers gunned down in Newtown, Conn. Thirty-two students and faculty killed at Virginia Tech. U.S. Rep. Gabby Gifford shot outside a supermarket. Thirteen students and educators brutally murdered at Columbine High School. Twelve people gunned down in a movie theater … [Continue reading...]

Councilman Gennaro Hails Passage of Groundbreaking ‘Green’ Legislation

March 4, 2013 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

Bills make renewable energy options more accessible, reduce flooding of low-lying areas from major storms and preserve biodiversity in city parks. Councilman James F. Gennaro (D-Fresh Meadows) applauded the passage last week of three critical pieces of legislation that bring the city closer to the goals outlined in Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s landmark PlaNYC – including a bill that would help prevent flooding from significant rain events such as Hurricane Sandy by requiring city plantings to be storm water resistant. Runoff from heavy rain events like Superstorm Sandy cause Combined Sewage Overflows (CSOs) to discharge over 27 billion gallons of polluted rainwater and sewage every year into bodies of water throughout New York City. Intro 75-A, authored by Gennaro, would require … [Continue reading...]

AFT on MetLife Survey of the American Teacher

March 1, 2013 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

AFT’s Weingarten: “When teacher dissatisfaction is at a 25-year high, school leaders have to stop ignoring the red flags and start listening to and working with teachers to figure out what they and their students need to succeed.” Statement of American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten on the “MetLife Survey of the American Teacher: Challenges for School Leadership”: “When teacher dissatisfaction is at a 25-year high, school leaders have to stop ignoring the red flags and start listening to and working with teachers to figure out what they and their students need to succeed. There’s a significant problem when we see a 23 percentage-point plunge in satisfaction from 2008 and a 5 percentage-point drop just since last year. WHO THE HELL DID I MISS?

January 30, 2013 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

I just received my tax return for 2011 back from the IRS. It puzzles me!!! They are questioning how many dependents I claimed. I guess it was because of my response to the question: "List all dependents?" I replied: 12 million illegal immigrants; 3 million crack heads; 42 million unemployed people on food stamps, 2 million people in over 243 prisons; Half of Mexico; and 535 persons in the U.S. House and Senate." Evidently, this was NOT an acceptable answer. I KEEP ASKING MYSELF, WHO THE HELL DID I MISS? … [Continue reading...]
