You may have heard about Chestnut blight that has eliminated the trees from our forests. Now we face Pine Beetles, Dutch Elm, Root Rust and now the Emerald Ash Borer that is killing millions of ash trees in more than 40 states. The United States Forest Service estimates there are more than 7.5 billion ash trees growing in 40 states all considered susceptible to EAB attacks. Americas leading expert on trees is Lance Walheim, author of more than 30 books including Landscaping for DUMMIES. he joins us from a park in the Chicago area to discuss what homeowners can do to protect their trees. More about Lance Walheim: Garden Expert Lance Walheim got his start gardening at the age of 12, and hes been providing helpful gardening tips for decades. He has appeared on the Discovery Channel, HGTV, DIY Network, on local television news programs, and on gardening radio shows from New York to Los Angeles and almost everywhere in between. He authored or contributed to more than 30 gardening books including Roses for Dummies, Lawn Care for Dummies, Landscaping for Dummies and Vegetable Gardening for Dummies. He also served as contributing editor for the 10th, 11th and 12th editions of the Sunset Western Garden Book and contributed to the National Gardening Book. He just finished working on the latest edition of the Southern Living Gardening Book, and is currently working on the Sunset Midwestern Garden Book. Walheim was staff editor at Sunset Magazine from 1985 to 1990 and regularly contributes to the magazine as a freelance writer. Walheim graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1975 with a degree in botany. He and his wife Laura live and work on a 17-acre citrus ranch in Exeter, California and have two daughters, Ashley and Teale.
