Women are celebrating their pregnancies like never before. In the midst of celebration, it’s important for moms-to-be to know the important steps to prepare for a healthy pregnancy. In the “too much information” age, it comes as no surprise that expecting moms-to-be are sharing and celebrating every aspect of pregnancy from giving the news early in the first trimester, to “saving the positive pregnancy stick”, to blogging and sharing information on the internet. In fact, a recent national survey of first-time moms (in 20s, 30s, 40s) found that despite superstition, women are not only sharing the news early in the first trimester but also call their mothers first to share the news (after one’s significant other). However, the most important phone call a mom-to-be can make is to her physician. Early prenatal care is especially important with more women waiting later in life to have children. A recent study from the Pediatrics journal shows that US women (30 and older) are giving birth at the highest rate in almost 40 years. Now more than ever, moms-to-be need to talk to their physician as soon as they can about the important first steps to prepare for a healthy pregnancy.
