…what is a Batizado?
Batizado (literally “baptism” in Portuguese) is an annual event that
officially inducts new members into our Nago family. It is also the
time of Troca de Cordas (“changing of cords”) when current students
have the chance to advance and attain their next cord level. Each
student’s progression to the next cord is based effort, dedication,
and improvement in all aspects of Capoeira.
Capoeira, unlike other martial arts, is so much more than just
learning cool moves. It is also about the music, the instruments, the
songs, the history, the culture. And of course the Roda….which is
made up of capoeiristas whose energy give life to the game of
capoeira. Each Nago student brings to the roda and to our group their
individuality which makes each capoeira player unique and their games
different.
Batizado is a time when can really appreciate all the different
aspects of Capoeira. During Batizado week, we are going to have the
opportunity to train with and learn from the games of some of the best
capoeiristas in the world. We will be bringing in special guests
including Mestre Pequines — a world famous capoeirista and the
founder of Capeira Nago, and Contra-Mestre Falcao — the head of
Capoeira Nago in Spain. Members of Nago Miami, Nago Milwaukee, and
Nago Spain will also be here to visit and provide us their support.
This is a very exciting and busy time of the year for us!!! Were all working together
to make this our best Batizado yet!!
