SUMMER SAFETY IS A MUST TO PROTECT KIDS AND FAMILIES THIS SEASON Author and World Renowned Safety and Health Expert Debra Holtzman to
Discuss Top Risks and Tips to Help Americans Enjoy a Safe Summer!
Fourth of July weekend is here and time for some patriotic fanfare! But along with the rockets red glare can come some serious dangers. More than 4,000 fireworks-related injuries happen to children under the age of 14 each year. Sparklers (often assumed to be the safest fireworks) can actually heat up to 1800 degrees Fahrenheithot enough to melt gold.
Fireworks may be the obvious risk of injury but there are many other seasonal culprits that can cause sickness and even harm. Food bacteria (E coli), water safety and alcohol risks are heightened in the summer, causing serious health issues during our holiday celebrations. Debra Holtzman is available to discuss the top health risks of the summer and how we can protect our families.
SUMMER SAFETY RISKS AND TIPS!
Personal fireworks: The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to leave them to trained professionals and adults.
Foods: Make sure to cook burgers to an internal temperature of at least 160 F and don’t leave perishable food at room temperature over two hours (or within an hour if 90+).
Alcohol: Even small amounts of alcohol can be dangerous to children, so keep drinks out of their reach.
First Aid: Just in case, keep assorted bandages, and antiseptic wipes on hand. It’s important to cover wounds, cuts and scrapes to prevent contact with germs and possible infection. Nexcare bandages are your best bet, as they provide a 360 degree seal that keeps out dirt & germs that may cause infection
Water safety: A small child can drown in as little as one inch of water, so its important not to multi-task while supervising them: no reading, napping, or talking on the telephone. Children should always wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved personal safety device when theyre nearby oceans, rivers, lakes, and when participating in water sports.
Pool drains: A missing, askew or broken drain cover can cause serious injury or death to children because of the drain’s strong suction action. Make sure the pool or spa is equipped with a securely attached anti-entrapment drain cover, and always ensure proper upkeep of all pool equipment.
BBQ Grill: Keep your child and/or pet at least 3 feet away from the grill.
Sunburns: Make sure there is plenty of shade, dress children in protective clothing and dont forget the sunscreen. Sunglasses are important too. Look for 100 % UVA and UVB protection.
