The BBC has reported that Philippine President Benigno Aquino has declared a state of national calamity to speed relief efforts for victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced after the high winds and floodwaters destroyed their homes. Damage to roads and airports has delayed the delivery of aid.
Typhoon Haiyan (known in the Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda) is unofficially the strongest recorded tropical cyclone to make landfall, with wind speeds up to 315 km/h (195 mph). The cyclone caused devastation in the Philippines, particularly on Samar Island and Leyte, where the governor estimated that at least 10,000 people may have died in the city of Tacloban alone.
More than nine million people have been affected in the Philippines. Many are now struggling to survive without food, shelter or clean drinking water.
We, The World’s allied organizations are local in the Philippines and working on the ground to deliver immediate aid and relief while beginning the process of rebuilding communities devastated by the storm. As is often the case in these disasters, those who were poorest and most vulnerable have been hit the hardest.
