Shortz is the celebrated word guru who edits The New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle. He has made and edited puzzles since he was 14, is the author or editor of more than 300 books, including several volumes of “The Puzzle master Presents”, “Will Shortz’s Best Brain Busters” and numerous best-selling volumes of sudoku puzzles. In 2006 he was the subject of a feature documentary film, “Wordplay” an in-depth look at Mr. Shortz and his loyal fan base. He wrote the riddles for the 1995 film “Batman Forever.” In 1997 Esquire magazine named him one of “The 100 Best People in the World.” On Monday, October 15, Will Shortz takes on a new challenge as The New York Times and Yahoo! team up to create a fun and unique custom crossword puzzle to be solved on Yahoo.com. For two weeks the Yahoo! community will be invited to solve the puzzle to enter for a chance to win one of five trips to Hawaii where they will have all the time in the world to work on crosswords. For the first time ever, integration of Yahoo!’s new search technology into the puzzle will help Yahoo!’s audience solve even the most puzzling crossword clues. Mr. Shortz is responsible for editing Sunday puzzles for The New York Times Magazine and crossword puzzles for the daily newspaper. He is The Times’ fourth puzzle editor. Before joining The Times, Mr. Shortz was editor of Games Magazine, which he joined in 1978. He is also the director of the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament, which he founded in 1978, and puzzle master for National Public Radio’s program “Weekend Edition Sunday” since 1987.
