Concerning The Events in Pittsburgh

Dear Members and Friends of The Actors’ Temple:

As I sit here to express my deep sadness at the tragedy in Pittsburgh, I am of two minds.

The events are unspeakably sad for those who were killed, for the Pittsburgh congregation, the community, and because we are all One, for all Jews everywhere; for everyone who attends a house of worship and who is of any minority. My heart goes out to all of them in their pain and loss.

At the same time we must also bear in mind that this was an isolated person and not a conspiracy against the Jewish People. It is like the school and nightclub shootings in Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, and Las Vegas committed by lone, unbalanced gunmen.

As we are all sad, it is important not to overreact. We are safe; as relatively safe as anyone in this country. If we can effect better gun control, we will be even safer, and I believe that these types of events will continue to occur until we ban assault rifles and limit access to ammunition.

We are safe in multicultural New York, as safe as any minority is in New York City, and that is quite safe. Let us share the love in our hearts with each other as a tribute to those who have been killed needlessly and senselessly.

Our willingness to come together will always determine the meaning of a tragedy. Let’s extract what good we can and mourn for what we can’t yet achieve.
