The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Administration for Children and Families (ACF) hosts a radio media tour to commemorate the 6th World Refugee Day. The U.S. admits more refugees than all other countries combined, and every American can be proud that we continue the great American tradition of offering safe haven to some of the world’s most vulnerable populations. On a day like today, I think it’s important to understand how our country helps these individuals once they arrive on America’s shores, says Martha E. Newton, director of ACF’s Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), within ACF, is the federal agency responsible for domestic resettlement which provides assistance to newly arriving refugees. Approximately 2.4 million refugees have been resettled in the United States since 1975. This year’s theme of the United Nations designated day is “New Home, A New Life”, which highlights the plight of refugees who flee their home countries to escape persecution and threats to their lives.
