A great four-day recently concluded at the World Financial Center in New York, running from June 12-15 as part of a campaign organized by the Greek National Tourism Organization in the U.S. and the Ministry of Tourism back in Greece. Named the World of Athens, the event featured live Greek chefs, dancers and music, and a giant sphere that showcased the various sites, sounds, tastes, and attractions that Athens offers U.S. tourists and businesses. At night, the sphere presented great images of Athens that could be seen from outside the structure and from afar.
More than 10,000 consumers and families attended and enjoyed the free four-day event, while also entering a contest to hopefully win a trip for two to Athens for seven days later this summer. Event organizers noted how the city of Athens is increasingly becoming a leading destination for U.S. tourists, with visitor numbers increasing over the last few years, attracted by the range of experiences on offer.
Mr. George Tambakis, the North American Director of the Greek National Tourism Organization, shared his excitement in bringing the attractions of Athens to America to showcase the city as a superb vacation destination: Not only does Athens have historical attractions, culture and cuisine, but the past decade has seen huge investment in infrastructure from our metro system to the citys airport, making Athens better than ever to visit as a leading European tourist destination for Americans.
In a press release issued on the first day of the event, the Greek Minister of Tourism, Mr. Konstantinos Markopoulos, stated The World Financial Center event is part of an international series of road shows for the City of Athens and Greece through five special events in the European and American markets. Our aim is to raise awareness that Athens is a forward thinking, contemporary European metropolis that has a lot to offer to U.S. tourists.
