“Are we there yet” no longer applies as the go-to descriptor for drivers hitting the road this summer. According to the recent Summer Drive Survey commissioned by BP of more than 1,000 drivers, 74% of the respondents admitted that they relish the road trip journey as much as they enjoy the destination – and are excited to get behind the wheel for the classic summer road trip! When asked about road trip styles, one third (39%) of drivers identified themselves as tourists – curious about their surroundings, making frequent stops to check out things along the way. Another third of drivers (35%) claimed they are “cruise-controllers” and that they enjoy driving and view it as a leisurely activity. So the next time Mom pulls over to visit Yosemite or the World’s Largest Ball of Twine, don’t make fun! The Summer Drive Survey also revealed: Ģ More than half of today’s drivers (55%) selected “Life is a Highway” as the song to best describe their next road trip adventure. Ģ If given the chance, the majority (54%) of drivers would prefer to cruise this summer with Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith over TomKat or even Brangelina! Ģ Most drivers (54%) would rather be caught making out, staring at themselves in the mirror or singing instead of picking their nose while on the road! Ģ When making a pit stop, 38% of drivers claimed that friendly service and environment would make or break their road trip. Surprisingly, clean bathrooms came in second (25%). To help drivers make the most of their gas mileage as they hit the road this summer, Greg Damon, an ASE Master certified technician and the winner of BP’s 2007 Golden Mechanic competition, has some great tips to share: Ģ Pump it up: Be sure to periodically check your tires and keep them properly inflated in order to improve gas mileage and avoid a flat tire while on the road. Ģ Become a smooth operator: Cleaner engines work better, so fill up with quality fuel on your next pit stop. With continuous use, Amoco Ultimate premium fuel at BP can help clean your engine while you drive, improving its performance-which may result in smoother acceleration and perhaps even better gas mileage. Ģ Get the junk out of your trunk: Take the extra weight out of your trunk and pack lightly! Remove “dead weight” to avoid unnecessary fuel consumption. Ģ On the road to nowhere: Avoid getting lost and making unwanted and unnecessary stops by mapping out your route in advance. Save some time (and gas) by stopping at a station where you can take care of all immediate needs, from food to beverages to clean bathrooms.
