Listen to “Architect Designs a Multifaceted Life Noushin” on Spreaker.
Wherever a person travels, certain structures seem to simply catch the eye. Some people may fleetingly wonder about the meaning, process, or person behind a particular piece of architecture, but few take the time to delve further into its history. Noushin, A Memoir: The Making of a Woman Architect (Amazon 2022) by Noushin Ehsan, AIA, provides insight into her own unique thoughts and experiences.
At a young age Noushin’s goal was to be an architect, and her journey was far from easy. Despite her family’s objections, she triumphed over numerous hardships to become the first woman to graduate with an MA in Architecture from UCLA. Her memoir recounts Noushin’s early years in Iran, the difficulties her family sometimes faced as members of the Bahá’i Faith, lifelong health struggles, a complicated personal life, and a harrowing escape from her home as revolution changed the face of her country.
The author has taught at prestigious universities and created architectural firms in London, Paris, Tehran, New York City, and beyond. She also has donated countless hours to charitable causes, toured the world as a traveling teacher, and devoted her life to making architectural services, once considered a luxury affordable only to the wealthy, accessible to every segment of society. The numerous paths she has taken were not always planned, but have resulted in a many-layered, remarkable life.
“(Her book) offers poignant and realistic viewpoints of a creative woman working to secure her future while not forgetting her past. A fascinating read.”—Author Connie Galvin
