Silverman joined AP in 1971 in San Francisco , was promoted to the national editing desk in 1976 and was named assistant managing editor in 1989. He was appointed deputy managing editor in 1992 and managing editor in 2000. In 2003 he was named vice president. Silverman has helped direct coverage from the scene of space shuttle flights, the Olympics, the Oklahoma City bombing, and every national political convention since 1984.
