The good news is there is plenty you can control when it comes to your digestive health. A healthy gut starts with the food you consume, yet many people don’t know which foods can actually stress, versus support, optimal digestive function and regularity.
Among the worst foods for your gut:
Fried foods, and foods coated in cheese, heavy creams or other fatty sauces can slow the digestive process and contribute to constipation.
Processed foods, like chips, crackers and cold-cuts, tend to lack adequate fiber and other nutrients needed to nourish the beneficial organisms naturally found in a healthy gut. This can lead to a host of digestive upsets, including irregularity and bloating.
Caffeinated sodas and coffee can relax the sphincter (the muscle at the top of the stomach) which can then let food back into your esophagus. Caffeinated liquids can also actually lead to a loss of water, which is essential to smoothly run intestinal tract.
Among the best foods for your gut:
Yogurts often contain probiotics which can help build up the gut microflora (simply put, the bacteria naturally living in a healthy gut)
Whole grains, and certain fruits and vegetables contain fibers and other prebiotics that feed and nourish the gut bacteria, thus playing an important role in creating an environment where healthy bacteria can flourish and benefit digestive health. Great food choices include barley, broccoli, artichoke hearts, apples and kiwifruit.
Top Food Fact: Did you know that kiwifruit promotes your digestive health in more ways than one? AND that not all kiwifruit is the same? Amongst kiwifruits, the New Zealand Hayward variety has been very extensively studied and found to be particularly ‘ripe’ with Actinidain, a naturally-occurring enzyme that not only breaks down proteins to make them easier to digest and ready for use by the body, but also provides other prebiotic effects on regularity.
On May 31, 2019, Dr. David Johnson, Professor of Medicine and Chief of Gastroenterology at Eastern Virginia Medical School, will discuss in detail the worst, and best, foods for your gut. He’ll also introduce a new dietary supplement ingredient that combines the “green powerhouse,” multi-action benefits of freeze-dried Hayward kiwifruit pulp for clinically-proven benefits on promoting regularity and constipation relief.
