The BOSSABRASIL Festival, in its 8th year, returns to Birdland presenting the best of Brazilian music. Rooted in Bossa Nova and Brazilian sounds, but with a sound all his own, multi Grammy-winning Jazz musician, DORI CAYMMI has celebrated a career of prosperity and recognition. Following the path laid by his father and namesake, legendary Brazilian musician, Dorival Caymmi who passed away a few years ago, Dori has created a style of music and a list of credits any musician would be proud of having Composed, Arranged, and Performed with greats such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Quincy Jones, Dionne Warwick, Gilberto Gil and Sarah Vaughan. Some of his well-known compositions will be performed as well as selections from his new CD “Music and Poetry” just released in tribute to his Father Dorival.
Dori’s musical endeavors have been recorded on numerous major labels and provided the soundtrack for plays and scores for TV and film. Dori Caymmi has secured his place as a staple in the world of Brazilian Jazz, recognized with 2 Latin Grammys and 7 Nominations and has performed at prestigious venues throughout the world such as Carnegie Hall, The Hollywood Bowl and the Montreux Jazz Festival. At times Dori has directed the band on Jay Leno’s Tonight Show. BOSSABRASIL is Produced by Pat Philips & Ettore Stratta.
Dori Caymmi’s very Special Guest JOYCE with whom he has enjoyed numerous collaborations is a star in her own right, one of the few female Brazilian women recognized for composing as well as being a musician/guitarist. Her sultry and subtle music is also rooted in the bossa nova sounds she heard while growing up in Rio de Janeiro. Joyce became instantly famous with her 1980 album “Feminina” which also exposed her music to other great recording artists. Joyce’s two latest albums are “Aquarius” featuring the great pianist Donato and “Slow Music” a collection of bittersweet love songs. As Joyce says” Music is food for the soul!”
Dori and Joyce will be joined by Tutty Moreno on drums with Rodolfo Stroeter on bass, both coming to New York from Brazil for this occasion. Dario Eskenazi, one of their biggest fans, will be on Piano.
With the blood of over 100 years of Brazilian musical history flowing through his veins and his collaboration with the very talented Joyce, the voice of Brazil will be heard loud and clear, at Birdland May 14 – 18.
