Debra Winger and Arliss Howard to Host Clearwater Benefit Concert This Sunday
BEACON, NY Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, Americas flagship environmental organization, is pleased to announce that Westchester rivertown residents Debra Winger and Arliss Howard will be hosting a special benefit concert for Clearwater featuring jazz great Sonny Rollins at the Music Hall in Tarrytown on Sunday, December 6. The concert will take place at 2PM.
Arliss and I are so glad to be part of this event, said Winger. Clearwater is one
of the real ways we can live on the Hudson and earn that right. Sonny Rollins is a seeker who, like the river, understands constant change.
Sonny Rollins benefit concert for Clearwater promises to be a remarkable event. With seating for about 850 people, the Music Hall in Tarrytown is the smallest venue the legendary jazz saxophonist and composer has performed at in nearly a decade, said publicist Terri Hinte, who also noted this was the first benefit concert Rollins has agreed to participate in over the course of his long, storied career.
Also, while Clearwater, which was founded by folk music icon Pete Seeger, has often held events featuring various musical genres (such as folk, bluegrass, world music, gospel and rock), this is the first benefit concert ever dedicated to jazz, Americas Great Musical Idiom.
Clearwater is tremendously honored to have Sonny Rollins performing on our behalf, said Jeff Rumpf, executive director of Clearwater, and knowing that Debra and Arliss Howard will be introducing him to the audience at the Music Hall makes the show even more special.
Earlier this year Debra Winger sat with Pete Seeger for a filmed interview at the former University Settlement Camp where Clearwater is now headquartered. Part of the interview can be seen in two Clearwater promotional videos that were premiered at Seegers 90th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden in May 2009.
Winger and Howard are also working with Catskill Mountain Keeper and Damascus Citizens to bring a moratorium to the gas drilling along the Marcellus Shale.
