Public Art Exhibit, Environmental Displays, Music and More
Official Ceremony at 12:30 PM
In celebration of Earth Day, on Wednesday, April 21, 11 am to 3 pm,
Friends of Dag Hammarskjold Plaza will launch Global Voices, an exhibition of photographs and oral histories that transforms a construction fence bordering the park into a vibrant expression of the UN Millennium Goals for health, education and the environment. As Gateway to the United Nations, Hammarskjold Plaza provides a unique setting to spread awareness of global concerns, including environmental sustainability. The park is located between 1st and 2nd Avenue on East 47th Street in Manhattan.
At the 12:30 PM ceremony, city officials and experts will open the exhibit and present their green initiatives alongside informative displays by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), NYH2O and Desmascus Citizens for Sustainability, the Greenmarket Program, NYC Park Advocates, the Korean Institute of Brain Science, and more. Recycling, park advocacy and protecting our natural resources are on the agenda, including the perils of gas drilling in the NYC Watershed and how it jeopardizes our drinking water.
Live music and healthy greenmarket snacks round out the program. The event is made possible by grants from State Senator Liz Krueger, Councilman Dan Garodnick, the Ford Foundation, and collaboration with Zeckendorf Development for the exhibit.
About Global Voices Exhibit
The public art exhibition conveys the relevance of the UN Millennium Development Goals in the lives of people of diverse backgrounds and generations worldwide. Produced in 2005 on the occasion of the UN World Summit, it was first displayed at the United Nations, and subsequently at the Aspen Institute, a prestigious think tank. The installation is made possible with the collaboration of Zekendorf Development, who are helping to mount the exhibit on the construction fence which surrounds their development site.
