WHAT: Once again the National Park Service has partnered with EarthCam to bring live views of iconic U.S. monuments to the world. EarthCam engineered a live streaming webcam to fit inside a pre-existing hole in the Washington Monument’s pyramidion, creating a unique way for the public to see Washington, D.C. Experience majestic views from 500 feet over the nation’s capital.
WHY: In addition to one-of-a-kind views of the WWII Memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool, the webcam was installed in time to view Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada’s facescape, “Out of Many, One.” This month-long National Portrait Gallery exhibit required 2,000 tons of sand and 800 tons of soil to create. The National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association helped make the project viewable to the public with EarthCam.
