ECOLIFE Conservation of San Diego County receives $25,000 grant from Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund for continued work in Central Mexico (Michoacan) to preserve Monarch Butterfly overwintering forests, improve health, reduce air pollution, and provide sustainable employment and improved economy for native villagers in ejidos that border the Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. ECOLIFE has trained locals to build fuel-efficient Patsari stoves to reduce indoor open fires, causing extreme respiratory disease as well as severe burns for women and children, reduce air pollution and reduce cutting of butterfly forest. ECOLIFE has also planted more than 80,000 oyamel fir trees. This grant will further the work, begin a nursery operation for the area, and help more families with stoves and sustainable living education, taught through partnerships with local Mexican Universities.
