All of us are prone to Anger, Jealousy, Greed. These are negative emotions. In some of us they are present 100 percent, in some 80 percent, in some 50 percent, in some 20 percent and in the great Saints – they are not present at all.
The great saints possess the emotions of Love, Sharing, Caring and Compassion. These are positive emotions arising out of awareness.
Even we have a large of small percentage of the positive emotions.
How do we overcome negative emotions and develop positive emotions?
We develop through Awareness. Each time you are angry, jealous or greedy – start practicing the awareness that you are angry now. The moment you are aware that you are angry, and are performing your actions due to anger, the anger slowly comes down. Then you will feel that your behavior was quite silly.
When we keep on practicing awareness of our negative emotions, slowly the negative emotions, show up less and less.
The old saying goes “count to 10 before you say something in anger“. Now many times, before we count to 10, the angry words come out. Then after some time you feel bad, that you said or did so many things in anger. That is when your awareness is functioning. In your state of awareness, you regret what you did.
When you keep on practicing awareness of each and every negative behavior, slowly the time gap between when you got angry and the time when the awareness comes in reduces. Initially two days after you get angry, the awareness will come in. Then the awareness comes after 1 day after you get angry. Then the awareness comes a few hours after you get angry. Then the awareness comes 20 minutes after you get angry. Then the awareness comes 5 minutes after you get angry. Then the awareness comes as you are getting angry. Then finally the awareness comes BEFORE you get angry. Once the awareness comes before you are angry, then there is no more anger displayed.
The irritation in you is not because you are a perfectionist. It is because of the anger in You.
The jealousy always is towards someone close to you, like your friend or relative or family. It is never for anyone unknown.
So all these negative qualities can be overcome by Developing AWARENESS.
FUNCTION OUT OF YOUR AWARENESS. NOT OUT OF YOUR EMOTION.
