May is National Stroke Awareness Month! Every 45 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke, making stroke the third leading cause of death in this country.1 One out of every 4 people who have had stroke will have another within 5 years.2 While stroke survivorship is on the rise in the U.S.,1 awareness of risk and risk reduction remains low. There is still a lot that can be done to reduce the risk of stroke in people who have already had one. Dr. Fred Callahan discusses: * Stroke and recurrent risk factors * Risk reduction methods * Treatment options for stroke survivors Some Stroke Statistics: * Of the 700,000 strokes that occur each year, 200,000 of them are recurrent. This means every 45 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke. * On average every 3 minutes someone dies from a stroke in the U.S. * Stroke can lead to paralysis, memory loss and speech problems.
