James W. McGlothlin began his career as a practicing attorney before he founded United Coal Company in 1970. As president, he used a keen business sense and visionary leadership to evolve United Coal Company, a leading producer of high-grade metallurgical coals, into The United Company. He led the company for 39 years as a chairman, president and CEO, and continues to serve as chairman and CEO. With busness interests comprising coal, oil, gas, financial services, pharmaceuticals and leisure services, The United Company is one of the largest privately held companies in the U.S.
A native of Grundy, Va., McGlothlin has been an advocate of education at all levels, particularly Mountain Mission School. He serves with distinction on the board of trustees at The College of William and Mary and at Mountain Mission School. He also is a member of the Virginia Business Higher Education Council and the PGA Tour Board, a past chairman of the National Coal Association, a national trustee of The First Tee, and he has served on numerous public corporate boards including CSX Corporation, Star Oil & Gas Ltd., Dominion Bankshares and Bassett Furniture Company.
McGlothlin has a BA from The College of William and Mary and a JD from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law. He has been lauded with honorary degrees from The College of William and Mary and Lincoln Memorial University, Emory & Henry College and Milligan College.
Avid collectors of American fine art, McGlothlin and his wife, Fran, have established the James W. and Frances G. McGlothlin Wing at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. In 2011, in accord with their interest in health care issues, they established the James W. and Frances G. McGlothlin Medical Education Center at Virginia Commonwealth University. They have three children: Martha, Tara and Gibson.

Quinnipiac University, located in Hamden, Conn., offers 73 undergraduate and graduate programs to 6,000 undergraduate and 2,000 graduate and law students through its schools of Business, Communications, Education, Health Sciences, Law and Nursing, and the College of Arts and Sciences. Quinnipiac’s 250-acre Mount Carmel Campus, next to Sleeping Giant State Park, contains academic buildings and residence halls. The nearby 250-acre York Hill Campus houses the TD Bank Sports Center, plus new residence halls for 1,800 students, the Rocky Top Student Center and a 2,000-car parking garage. A third 104-acre campus in North Haven serves as home to the School of Health Sciences, School of Education, School of Nursing, and the future School of Medicine, slated to open in Fall 2013.
