New York, April 29, 2010, Jumpstart’s Scribbles to Novels event was held last night, bringing some acclaimed authors like Amy Sedaris, Christina Kline and William Cohan together with some great kids to celebrate the importance of literacy and the power of the written word. Remember that even brilliant writers began their journeys with just a few scribbles on a piece of paper.
Jumpstart brings together caring adults and well trained college students with low-income children who work together for an entire school year on the language, literacy and social skills they need to learn not only in kindergarten, but in life, thereby trying to close the achievement gap in early education. Since 1993, Jumpstart has empowered adult mentors to impact over 75,000 children across America.
“Whether these children become the next great literary minds…or the future government, business and science leaders, the skills they are gaining because of Jumpstart will help them create better lives for themselves and a brighter future for us all”, said Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
