Good afternoon,
Who couldn’t use some good news? Neighbors helping neighbors. Folks lending strangers a helping hand. We can all use just a little bit more positivity in our lives. Ahead of Random Acts of Kindness Day, tomorrow Thursday, February 17, 2022, we wanted to share some inspiring stories of folks turning to GoFundMe across the country to give back in their communities and show them what the power of help can do for others. Random Acts of Kindness Day celebrates and encourages random acts of kindness and is part of Random Acts of Kindness week which is celebrated February 13-19, 2022.
Below are a few examples of people actively working to make a difference in their communities through small, random acts of kindness:
In Corinth, Texas, Wayne Tomlinson used the app ‘NextDoor’ to help 52 people in 21 months in his community suffering economic stress during the beginning of the pandemic. He assisted with things including helping with past due rent and mortgage payments, utilities, finding jobs, providing needed food and clothing, and more.
In Whittier, California more than $57,000 has been raised for a man named Peter, who is deaf and blind and uses American Sign Language to communicate. Peter works at the local Trader Joe’s and is on the verge of homelessness every month and doesn’t have health insurance. Folks in the community want to help pay his rent, buy him food and fix the truck he uses to get to work, and any medical bills he has incurred during his recent 28-day stay in the ICU for non-covid related issues.
In Hamilton, Georgia, Aaron Best is working to surprise his neighbor with a new roof on his dilapidated Farm House. The older resident is terrified of heights and doesn’t have the means to fix it. Best updates his progress on his Youtube channel.
In Los Angeles, volunteers are looking to bring karaoke back to Skid Row after having to shut down due to the pandemic.
In Louisburg, North Carolina, Susan Roberts is lending a helping hand to a local community member battling oral cancer who is unable to fix a broken well-pump used to funnel water to his home.
In Nampa, Idaho, residents are coming together to help Kerry Judd, a 71-year-old DoorDash driver who works to make ends meet after his wife died some years ago.
Kwane Stewart in Los Angeles, known as the ‘Street Vet’, offers his services to pets and owners experiencing homelessness and/or financial hardship. His random acts of kindness, which started in the fall of 2019, have inspired more than $200,000 in donations. For those looking to provide their own little random act of kindness for someone in need, all funds go to his non-profit, Project Street Vet, which provides free veterinary care, treatment, and pet support. Read more about Kwane’s efforts to protect the human-animal bond in January’s Smithsonian Magazine. To donate to Kwane’s cause visit: Project Street Vet on GoFundMe.
Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to get in touch with any of the organizers.
