New York’s legendary and beloved Empire Diner on 10th Avenue and W. 22nd Street sadly served its last meal on May 15, 2010 because they lost their lease and had to close their doors after thirty years. The next day Empire threw a bittersweet goodbye party for their many customers and friends, serving up some of their signature dishes with their usual side order of
love..
With its chrome black interior, traveller marquee light, flashing EAT sign and outdoor cafe, Empire became a major force in the Chelsea reinaissance that allowed art galleries, clubs and restaurants to replace the machine and auto parts shops that dominated the neighborhood thirty years ago.
Empire was a special Chelsea landmark where locals mixed with actors, models, police and gangsters as well as celebrities like Spielberg and Streisand to name a few. It was the kind of a place where you could come in at any hour and instantly find a warm and caring staff who made you feel at home. If you were alone on Thanksgiving or Christmas, Empire was there to welcome you like family.
Owners Renate Gonzales and Mitchell Woo are looking for a site to open a new Empire Diner in New York as well as exploring the possibility of opening Empires in other cities and perhaps bring the “Empire Experience” to Europe as well. The owners will welcome suggestions for appropriate sites and post updates on their website.
