The Daughters of Anacaona Writing Project (DAWP) is a creative writing and leadership workshop, founded by Ibi Zoboi. In partnership with Haiti Cultural Exchange, this project aims to cultivate empowerment, creativity, cultural awareness, community service, college and career readiness in primarily Haitian immigrant and first generation teen girls residing in Brooklyn. DAWP will act as a bridge linking newcomers to the life they’ve left behind in Haiti or first generation teen girls to the cultural experiences of their immigrant families using creative writing as a tool for expression. The 5-session workshops will culminate in a yearly publication of an anthology including the participants’ best work and a reading for invited family, friends, teachers, and community members.
