One of the first projects in the book is to create an emergency kit. Youve probably heard of these. Often it is a backpack or a sturdy, water proof container with a secure lid. You want to fill it with all the things you will need in case you are without power, or have to evacuate your home.
Start with at least three days worth of food and water. Use food that is easy to prepare without heat and wont spoil. Have enough water, one gallon per person per day, then add a flashlight, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra batteries and a first aid kit. Dont forget medications and personal hygiene items. In addition, you could include cleaning supplies, such as disinfecting bleach. An adult in your family can use bleach to purify drinking water and to disinfect surfaces.
