It was the evening that I went to the Hineni Chanukah party that I took a risk and gave a speech about surviving a near death experience. It was to my surprise that I would receive the book “Life Is A Test – How To Meet Life’s Challenges” by Rebbetzin Esther Jungreis. “Life is a Test” begins with tests of self-discovery and then examines the interpersonal relationships, concluding with a section on perceiving the Divine Design in the big picture of global events, as well as in ones own world. Through reading her book we learn to see that every situation we are put in life are mere tests from G-d. By passing these tests we learn to master our weaknesses and overcome our desires in order to obtain a higher degree of faith. She provides stories about herself and people that seek her advice in order to show us the difficult situations that people are often put through in life. But throughout every situation we have a choice. We can give up or we can fight are battles and master our tests. In her book she believes that “You are Chelek Eloka–a spark of G-d–so even if you messed up, even if you find yourself in an intolerable situation, be it in a prison in Siberia or bankruptcy in New York, your soul remain pure because it is Chelek Eloka–a part of G-d. And if you listen to its voice, you will always find your way back to who you really are and the purpose for which you were created.” The Rebbetzin is also the author of three critically acclaimed books, “Jewish Soul On Fire” (Wm. Morrow & Co.); “The Committed Life” (HarperCollins), which has been translated into Hebrew, Spanish, Russian, Hungarian and French, and “The Committed Marriage” (HarperCollins) which has also been published in Spanish and Hebrew editions. For over 40 years, Rebbetzin Jungreis has written a weekly column for The Jewish Press, the world’s largest Anglo-Jewish weekly with a circulation of 500,000. She has been featured in major publications including “Newsweek”, “Time”, “New York Magazine” and “People” as well as major newspapers throughout the world.
