All of my life, I have been the kind of person who battles mild depression. For many years, I depended on other people to make me happy. However, at some point, I came to realize that the only person responsible for my happiness was me! Life circumstances have a way of rearing up and interfering with our pursuit of happiness, but how we respond to the things that are happening around us is so important! Perception is everything!
Let me tell you a secret; you can train yourself to be happy. Here’s one example: you wake up ready to enjoy the weekend but when you pull back the curtains all you see is a gloomy, rainy day. For many people, the first instinct would be to feel as if the weekend was ruined. What if, instead, you decided to grab a blanket, a cup of hot tea, and a book and curl-up on the sofa listening to the rain?
It’s all about perspective.
If you’re not a person who is “naturally happy,” donut worry! I promise, when you begin implementing some of these happiness hacks, day by day, you will find yourself becoming a happier person. We have to practice the things we want to be good at. Practicing happiness is worth your time and effort. The more you do it, the more you will feel it naturally. Just remember, while you may not be in control of your genetics, or all of the life circumstances, you ARE in control of your attitude and how you respond.
I hope this gets you started thinking about how to practice being a happier person. If you are struggling with unhappiness during this season, please reach out to a professional. At the very least, reach out to someone you love and let them know that you are having a hard time.
Those of us who experience clinical depression may often feel like happiness is not within our control, so it is crucial to work with a professional who can help you live a more balanced life. It is possible.
