Donation to fund new medical center at FAU The Associated Press – Boca Raton Community Hospital said Tuesday it received a $75 million donation from a charity to build a new academic medical center on the campus of Florida Atlantic University. The new hospital will give medical students at the Boca Raton campus the opportunity to complete a full four-year program to receive a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Miami’s medical school without having to leave the area. Currently, students can only complete their first two years of training at the campus before transferring elsewhere. The new facility is expected to be completed in 2011. The donation was provided by the Schmidt Family Foundation, a Boca Raton-based charitable organization founded in 1982 and ”dedicated to helping people help themselves,” according to the foundation’s Web site. ”This generous gift from the Schmidt Family Foundation is invaluable in helping us break ground on one of the most advanced academic medical facilities in the country, providing the aging population with the biomedical breakthroughs and clinical expertise they need,” said Gary Strack, president and CEO of Boca Raton Community Hospital.
