American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry “Gives back their smiles” by Donating Services to Repair the Damage of Abuse. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. For the courageous women who have mustered the strength to get themselves out of a very bad situation, there’s an organization that’s been helping to erase the physical scars of domestic violence. Give Back a Smile was founded by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry out of a desire to help victims of unfortunate circumstances. Joining forces with the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 6,000 AACD dentists, lab technicians, and other dental professionals have volunteered their time and experience pro bono to help people who have been victims of abuse. Nearly 600 domestic abuse victims have been helped by an estimated $4.7 million in services. Currently, 339 applicants throughout the U.S. are being treated. Julie is one of the five million Americans affected by domestic violence. She managed to escape one terrible day but sustained extensive injury to her jaw and teeth. Every time she looked in the mirror, she was reminded of her experience. But, looking at her today, one would see little visual evidence of her experience.
