The Bowery Mission Partners with WNBA Team New York Liberty and the Mayor’s Office in a Winter Coat Drive for Unhoused New Yorkers and Migrant Families
NEW YORK, December 6, 2023 – The Bowery Mission is partnering with WNBA team New York Liberty and the Office of the Mayor to hold a winter coat drive to benefit the city’s unhoused population as well as migrants who have recently arrived in New York City. The drive will run from 10am to 4pm this Saturday, December 9 at The Bowery Mission’s iconic location at 227 Bowery.
As the number of unhoused New Yorkers continues to grow and as the city grapples with new migrant arrivals, The Bowery Mission together with New York City’s Office of Faith Based and Community Partnerships, New York City Mayor’s Office, and the Office of Immigrant Affairs is rallying to provide new and gently used coats to anyone in need, including migrants who may be experiencing their first New York winter. The WNBA team New York Liberty will also be on site to participate in the coat drive.
“For more than 150 years, it’s been our mission to welcome and serve all in need, no matter where they come from and why they find themselves in need,” said James Winans, President and CEO of The Bowery Mission. “The Bowery Mission was itself founded by two immigrants to serve an influx of new migrants living in the Lower East Side, underscoring the incredible potential for newcomers to become catalysts of positive change and community transformation.”
The Bowery Mission has seen a rise in migrants coming to its red doors for food and other assistance, and as winter sets in, the Mission will provide hygiene kits and other winter accessories to an increasing number of New Yorkers experiencing homelessness.
“We are looking to collect 10,000 coats,” Mr. Winans said. “We welcome members of the community to donate new or gently used adult and children’s coats so we can meet this critical need.”
