VOSS FOUNDATION
Voss Foundation is dedicated to providing access to clean water to communities in Sub-Saharan Africa and raising awareness of ongoing need in the region. We employ a unique approach that ensures local ownership and long-term sustainability through partnerships with trusted organizations on the ground, use of appropriate technology, and through systems that align environmental consideration with the diverse water needs of a community. Founded by the directors of VOSS of Norway ASA as an independent 501(c)(3) public charity in 2008, with offices in New York and Oslo, Voss Foundation has changed the lives of over 100,000 people in Kenya, Mali, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, and Swaziland.
Here are some questions Good News asked Georgica:
Why partner with Voss? Especially on a day your restaurant is generally closed… The Voss Foundation is an incredible charity organization that uses a grass roots approach to it’s fund raising. These are regular people doing extraordinary things. With that in mind, when they came to us with the idea of doing a benefit dinner, it was impossible to say no.
– Georgica seems to host a lost of benefits, the most famous being Jessica White’s Angel Wings — why are benefit programs so important to you? We opened Georgica at the height of the financial crisis, a time when restaurants were closing, not opening. If it were not for the help of family and friends, the vision would have never became reality. By partnering with charitable organizations like the Voss Foundation, it allows us to return the favor.
– When you opened Georgica what was your vision for the space? Why do you think its been so successful for 5 years now? When we opened Georgica, the country was going through a huge transition. The financial crisis put limits on disposable income and forced people to become more selective with their entertainment dollar. Our concept was simple. We wanted to open a one-stop shop for dining and nightlife. It was a modern version of the supper club concept. Only, instead of a band, we use a DJ. By remaining true to that concept, we were able to create a unique niche that has allowed us to build a loyal following that has continued to expand each season. Since we first opened, many venues have tried to follow suit, but no one has been able to copy the feel. We take nothing for granted. Every year we spend our offseason trying to improve upon the concept for the following season. Because we are only open during the summer, people spend their winters anxiously awaiting for Georgica to reopen and, due to those yearly improvements, the concept stays fresh.
– What causes are you most interested in partnering with? At Georgica, we have partnered with charitable organizations that benefit all types of causes. For us, the sincere need is what’s most important. So whether it is about helping to supply a food bank in New York City or building a fresh water well in Africa, our goal is to ensure that we do our part. We’re aware that we alone can not solve every issue, but we know that we can be a part of the solution. Beyond the actual funds we raise, we also hope to raise awareness, which can be just as important and have an even larger long term impact.
