This segment that travel expert Pauline Frommer, of Frommer Travel Guides, is talking about the death of the Staycation and the rise of the Smartcation.
Smartcation’s according to Pauline is the emerging trend where travelers are finding creative ways to get the most value possible from shorter vacations, in destinations that offer a wide variety of unique and diverse experiences.
A North American-wide survey conducted in Spring 2011 found that:
• More people are planning to take vacations this summer than they did in the past two summers.
• The most important consideration for travelers is value for money.
• Short getaways of four days or less are becoming more popular.
• 56% of North American travelers plan to take a short summer vacation of 4 days or less, compared to 27% of respondents that plan to stay home this summer.
• 65% of North American travelers plan to spend the same amount of money or more than they did on travel last year.
