Good morning! As Halloween approaches this Thursday, I just wanted to send a quick reminder that Guiding Eyes for the Blind Training Supervisor Shanon Walsh has provided a few tips for keeping your readers’ pups safe this Halloween. Again, these include:
- If your dog is stressed by the constant door ringing, you can utilize a crate in a room far from the doorbell sound, and use a special treat to help them pass the time.
- Be sure to check on your dog periodically to ensure they are not overly stressed, and do not leave your dog out in the yard while trick or treaters are visiting.
- Keep all candy up and away from your pets. Utilize a container that you can close and keep it in on the counter or a shelf when waiting for your visitors.
- Consult with your veterinarian if your dog has ingested any candy. Try to find the wrappers so you can identify what kind and how much candy to report to your vet.
- Although guide dogs have had lots of training and exposure to new places and things, they can still react to new and startling stimuli the same as any pet. Safeguard your working dogs and pets on Halloween by keeping them safe, inside and away from the door.
- While we all want our pets with us all of the time, sometimes it’s best to leave them at home. If you do bring your dog along with you be sure you have identification tags on them, use a collar or harness that can’t slip out of if they are spooked, and be prepared to take them home if the evening is overwhelming for them.
