The American Embassy Deaths in Libya
It is with great sadness that we express our sincere condolences and deepest sympathies to the friends and families of U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and the other American patriots, including communications officer Sean Smith and former Navy SEALs Glen A. Doherty and Tyrone S. Woods, who perished during the attacks at the American Embassy in Libya.
We strongly condemn the grievous and murderous attacks on these honorable men – whether it was a planned assault or spontaneous outrage prompted by the deeply bigoted and insulting film placed on social media earlier.
In his speech for the consular re-opening ceremony in Libya less than three weeks ago, Ambassador Stevens said, “Relationships between governments are important, but relationships between people are the real foundation of mutual understanding.”
Here at The Common Good we believe this to be fundamental in bridging the gap between differing people and groups – and, as such, we re-commit to advocate for the ideals of respect, consideration and cooperation as a basis of our daily interactions — the very values that Ambassador Stevens and his colleagues worked for — while we also consider the need for muscular and realistic strategies for dealing with hatred, irrationality, lawlessness and national security imperatives.
With this in mind, our luncheon discussion this Thursday is particularly timely and important. TCG hosts a luncheon discussion on Middle East topics this upcoming Thursday, September 20th from 12:15 – 1:45pm. Please join us as U.S. Col. Jack Jacobs and Middle East expert Colin Kahl examine the dangers and possibilities rapidly unfolding in this volatile region. Please visit our website to RSVP for the event. Just as important. please share this email with with friends you believe would be interested in joining TCG in being better informed and more impactful by fostering reasoned debate and civil dialogue around even our most contentious issues.
Also this past week: International Economist Dambisa Moyo at The Common Good
Last week internationally acclaimed economist and author Dambisa Moyo gave a blockbuster talk on the details and consequences of China’s rush to corner the world’s increasingly scarce resources. The discussion centered on the impact on economic growth for the huge emerging populations, international trade, commodities, and the need to re-think national strategies on the world’s dwindling resources.
Moyo spoke to a room of TCG members about her most recently published book, “Winner Takes All: China’s Race for Resources and What It Means for the World.” As with all our events, the talk occurred with a small group of members and their guests who were able to meet the author and have copies of her book signed by Moyo.
Ms. Moyo discussed how China and the U.S. are dealing with the planet’s dwindling supply of natural resources, and what the U.S. would have to do to better position itself for the future.
